The Advent of Periodical Indexes and the Event of Victorian Studies
When does Victorian studies begin? How does the field understand its own history? In contrast to more conventional stories about the origin of Victorian studies, this article recovers the constitutive work of bibliographers, list makers, librarians, and uncelebrated knowledge workers who envision and support the archives of a field. I demonstrate how the field forms in relation to the regeneration of nineteenth-century texts in twentieth-century …
A Fully-Searchable Multimodal Dataset of the Illustrated London News, 1842–1890
This paper introduces a dataset of 72,081 wood-engraved images extracted from the Illustrated London News (ILN) from the years 1842 to 1890. In the mid-19th century, the ILN revolutionized news consumption by combining text with high-quality wood-engraved illustrations published at scale. While digitization has facilitated text-based analysis of historical periodicals, visual content remains challenging to explore systematically. We address this …

Lajos Kossuth and the Transnational News
The scale of newspaper digitization and emergence of computational research methods has opened new opportunities for scholarship on the history of the press–as well as a new set of problems. Those problems compound for research that spans national as well as linguistic contexts. This article offers a novel methodological approach for confronting these challenges by synthesizing computational with conventional methods and working across a collabor…
Image Analytics and the Nineteenth-Century Illustrated Newspaper
The nineteenth-century British periodical press took textual production to a scalethat, for many commentators then and now, summoned the sublime. It was a“flood” which was “too vast to be dealt with as a whole,” in the words of theBritish Quarterly Reviewin 1859

Data Copperfield
This essay reports on a pedagogical experiment that used web-based collaboration tools to coordinate a collaborative module on David Copperfield for two undergraduate classes at different universities in autumn 2014. Comprising third-and fourth-year English majors in a 'History and Theory of the Novel' course at the University of Georgia (UGA) and first-year interdisciplinary students in an honours seminar on 'Reading in the Digital Age' at North…
By Accident or Design
'By Accident or Design: Writing the Victorian Metropolis' takes Henry James' observation of London in 1888 at his word, arguing that accident was both a powerful metaphor and material context through which the Victorians arrested the paradoxes of metropolitan modernity and reconfigured understandings of form and change. This book shows how the material conditions of urban accidents offer new and compelling modes of analysis for intellectual and l…
Chaos and Connections on the Victorian Railway
The Scholarly Monograph Unbound
Particularly in humanities disciplines, the scholarly monograph has held a privileged place within an ecology of prestige. But systemic changes in the economics of academic publishing and the technical affordances of digital, networked scholarship raise many questions about the “book” and its futures. This essay enters debates about the future of the book to illustrate the institutional pressures, technological shifts, and intellectual opportunit…
How to Not Read a Victorian Novel
This article uses an exercise in distant reading or "not reading" to make a claim for digital pedagogy: that it amplifies the interrogative tradition of humanities study. The exercise uses a set of accessible and freely-available text analysis and visualization tools on the web to encourage students to build their own methods of interpretation. While structured as a paper assignment, it essentially works like a humanities lab report. Students are…
