Perceived risks and benefits of telePrEP interventions
PURPOSE: Many rural areas lack brick-and-mortar HIV prevention resources despite the increasing rates of HIV. Although online HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) programs can potentially increase uptake among rural sexual minority men (SMM), their attitudes and preferences regarding telehealth-based PrEP (telePrEP) programming are uncertain. This qualitative study examined rural SMM's perceived risks and benefits of participating in a hypothetica…

How Medical-Dental EHR Integration Can Improve Diabetes Care
Since the mid-1990s, poor oral health has been neglected as a public health threat, despite its recognition as epidemic in scale by the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Surgeon General. Americans' poor oral health influences their overall health and, from a population standpoint, incurs dire economic and human costs. This article describes how health information transfer within the Marshfield Clinic Health System's integra…

Antarctica in the gray zone
All appears quiet on Australia’s southern front – Antarctica. The continent remains a beacon of cooperation, home to a continued system of international governance and scientific engagement, lauded as a political win from the depths of the Cold War. Beneath the surface, however, this article argues that strategic competition is now building. In Antarctica, this competition takes the form of gray zone activities. This article argues that the proli…
The weaponisation of everything
An entire International Relations (IR) generation has been taught that globalization created an innate interdependence between states, and that this interdependence kept war at bay. In many ways, Mark Galeotti reminds us that the pressures and tensions, which have for centuries led to war, did not evaporate. In The weaponisation of everything, Galeotti presents a field guide to an overlooked war zone: the interdependence of states. Given the lita…
History of International Relations and Russian foreign policy in the 20th century, volume I
How are future Russian international affairs scholars and professionals being trained? As well as an interesting lesson in the diversions between political narratives of Russia and the West, this question is of significant relevance to the future of Russia–West relations, and perhaps the contours of international relations throughout the twenty-first century. Crafted as a foundational text for students of International Relations, this edited work…

The Ninth International Conference on Computer Ethics: Philosophical Enquiry (CEPE 2011) was held in Milwaukee, WI. Four papers originally presented at that conference are included in this issue of Computers and Society . The selected papers examine a wide range of information/computer-ethics-related issues, and taken together, they show great diversity in the field of information/computer ethics. We are continually negotiating with ethics, law, …
Computer Science Security Research and Human Subjects
This paper explores the growing concerns with computer science research, and in particular, computer security research and its relationship with the committees that review human subjects research. It offers cases that review boards are likely to confront, and provides a context for appropriate consideration of such research, as issues of bots, clouds, and worms enter the discourse of human subjects review
Internet research ethics and the institutional review board
The Internet has been used as a place for and site of an array of research activities. From online ethnographies to public data sets and online surveys, researchers and research regulators have struggled with an array of ethical issues around the conduct of online research. This paper presents a discussion and findings from Buchanan and Ess's study on US-based institutional review boards and the state of internet research ethics
Online Survey Tools
A survey of 750 university human Research Ethics Boards (HRECs) in the United States revealed that Internet research protocols involving online or Web surveys are the type most often reviewed (94% of respondents), indicating the growing prevalence of this methodology for academic research. Respondents indicated that the electronic and online nature of these survey data challenges traditional research ethics principles such as consent, risk, priva…
