“Generative AI literacy across education and business
This systematic literature review analyses AI literacy, focusing on the required competencies for, the obstacles arising from, and the benefits of, Generative AI (GenAI) in the fields of education and business. The analysis uses the PRISMA 2020 methodology with data from the SCOPUS and ERIC databases. A total of 538 articles were identified; of these, 206 were included after the full-text screening phase. Of those 206, only 33% (education) and 29…
Professional development strategies of out-of-field STEAM teachers in Austrian middle schools
Pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) is the knowledge that teachers need to effectively present content to students. PCK is needed in every subject, including when teachers teach out-of-field (OOF) subjects despite not having received subject-specific training. When teachers work OOF without adequate content knowledge, their PCK is likely to be underdeveloped, which may negatively impact their students’ learning and leave teachers feeling uncertai…
Partnerships in the metaverse
Many European universities have explored different online formats to support collaboration between students. Ideally, group interactions should support the forming of partnerships between students and positively impact the learning process. We explored the nature of such partnerships when students’ online interactions take place in a metaverse, where individuals are represented by avatars and interact in a three-dimensional virtual space. We wond…
Researching student competence development through the lens of cultural historical activity theory
In the present study, we followed a group of students over the course of a three-semester project aimed at increasing their abilities to express their competence development. Extensive data (video, transcripts, documentation of artifacts and communications, and field notes) was analyzed in a framework analysis based on cultural–historical activity theory (CHAT). We understood contradictions, either within or between students’ activity systems, as…

The existence of disinformation in online environments increases the risk that young people will be exposed to manipulated content. It is not surprising, then, researchers and educators are focusing on ways to build pupils’ multiliteracy competencies. In this article, we look at the role visual information plays when students assess the trustworthiness of online information and disinformation. The authors present data from Austrian classroom inte…
Special Issue
Young people grow up in a digitised world. • Educators and educational researchers need to be equipped to support young people. • This special issue employs various research designs. • It aims at unravelling the relationships between digital technologies and their significance for education
Presenting a students’ tale
Smartphones are part of young people's lives from a relatively young age. However, smartphones are often banned in classrooms and parents, teachers, and school authorities still perceive the benefits of smartphones in schools with skepticism, indicating a distrust in young people and their ability to utilise this technology aptly. This article presents a manifesto on smartphones produced by a Danish primary school class when they were in grade ni…
Reflection through Diffraction
To address the complexities associated with transitioning towards sustainable energy solutions, there are increasing demands to employ interdisciplinary approaches. However, these still represent a minority of research projects. This is due to the well-known understanding that researchers' skills and methods are largely anchored within their nested disciplines, and to be working in an interdisciplinary manner would require reading and understandi…

What happens when we go online, interact and leave our digital footprints? What is the nature of the online spaces that teachers and their students inhabit and the implications of being in these spaces? In this article we have explored these questions by following the theoretical inspirations by James Paul Gee about affinity spaces and Martin Heidegger’s notions on dwelling. The article interweaves its argument with examples from several research…
Reflections on Algorithmic Thinking for Video Analysis – Sorting Out Complex Human Activities
Algorithmic thinking approaches utilize a number of steps to break down the issues surrounding a given problem. It involves a problem being analyzed and specified to then identify basic actions to the given problem that can be used to construct an algorithm. This means that algorithmic thinking is a very structured way of thinking and analyzing things. In this article, I will discuss how those principles could be used in teaching video ethnograph…
Reflective Reconstruction of Visual Products
This paper presents an argument about the cultural construction of visual products. Based on data from video observations, interviews and the collection of student-produced (visual) artifacts, a material ethnography approach is presented. Applying reflexivity with the use of visuals, the following argument is made. Instead of revealing insights through just one approach, a reflective methodology should consider: (a) the context in which the visua…
Coding the Complexity of Activity in Video Recordings
This paper presents a theoretical approach to coding and analyzing video data on human interaction and activity, using principles found in cultural historical activity theory. The systematic classification or coding of information contained in video data on activity can be arduous and time consuming; however, it is one of the ways to make sense of complex information, which in turn can add value to the process of exploring selected themes. By rev…

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
This paper illustrates how important changes can occur in science learning and teaching if teachers take the trouble to understand and respect the cultural worlds of Indigenous students, and incorporate something of this understanding within their teaching practice. Ten teachers participated in a specially-designed one-year university postgraduate course, which encouraged them to incorporate into their classroom learning two Māori pedagogical pri…
