Impact of targeted interventions on success of high-risk engineering students
Introduction The study examines the impact of targeted educational interventions on the academic success and retention of engineering students identified as high-risk, with a focus on two student groups historically underrepresented in STEM: underrepresented minority (URM) and female students. These interventions included an alternative curriculum pathway, a co-calculus support course, and spatial visualization training. Building on our previous …
Athens Begins its Era “Under the Shade” - A Few Perspectives on the Opportunities, Traumas and Successes that Changed an Ancient (Authentic) Polis into an (Ancient) “Destination City”
The re-invention (sometimes the evolution or devolution) of the schools of Athens as it internationalized in the late Roman Republic assumed beneath it the story of the re-invention of the town – in the case of Athens the ‘definitive’ town in a culture where ‘town’ (polis) meant something far more radically independent and hyper-competitive (both inside and outside the walls) than anything we normally mean be such a term today. An authentic, abor…
It Seemed Like Such a Good Idea at the Time … - Expected and Unexpected Consequences when Athens & Other Major Greek City States Leveraged Philip V to Draw Rome into the Eastern Mediterranean
The grand theme of the "liberation of Greece" is peculiar in the second and first centuries B.C. by being proclaimed more often by outsiders than by Greeks, and far more often by outsiders than by Athenians. The Athens that ultimately became wholly Roman after the disastrous hostage crisis provoked by Mithridatic forces on the Acropolis in the 80's started down that road by joining with a few other Greek city states to call in Roman aid against P…
Plato’s Academy and the “Roman Market”
The innovative (and sometimes painful) story of Athens’ self-transformation from a self-defined and self-confident independent city-state to a culture-market and service economy that discovered it could thrive best by selling its heritage to others is one I have written on in the past from a number of angles. To the elite of Athens, both community leaders and leaders in the city’s culture, the most poignant stories may have been those of the city…
Evaluation of Long-Term Flow Controller for Monitoring Gases and Vapors in Buildings Impacted by Vapor Intrusion
This study evaluated the use of a long-term capillary flow controller paired with an evacuated canister for indoor air exposure monitoring in a vapor intrusion (VI) environment with trichloroethylene in comparison to the traditional method utilizing a diaphragm flow controller. Traditionally, air sampling with 6 L evacuated canisters equipped with diaphragm flow controllers has been best suited for 8 to 24 h samples. New advances in capillary flo…
Measuring the impact of student success retention initiatives for engineering students at a private research university
Introduction Student success in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is a national concern. To increase engineering retention and graduation rates at a small private institution, a university council developed a binary classifier to identify high-risk students and proposed interventions that included decoupling first-year Physics and Calculus courses, support in introductory Calculus, and Spatial Visualization (SV) training. T…
March, October, the Yoke and the Arch
This study attempts an alternate look at what is sometimes a quick study of an ingrained “Roman aggression” placed in the opening chapter of a typical Roman history, re-evaluating the “us-them” element in Roman thinking during their primeval “homesteading” era, and some of the motived often imputed to tribal Roman culture that have been used to explain their expansion in Italy (and after). From the pomoerium, or spiritual/physical boundary of the…
Research on Arts and Humanities
This paper presents a survey of twenty-six research presentations at the 9th Annual International Conference which took place in Athens, 3-4 January 2022. Participants were coming from thirteen different countries (Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Hungary, India, Italy, Republic of Korea, Romania, Senegal, Serbia, South Africa, Spain, and USA). The aim of this survey is to summarize the main research findings. These presentations covered a wide range of t…
The Lyceum in Twilight
After the Athenian crisis of the early 80’s, which saw the ancient city held hostage between an Anatolian military expedition (whose leader at least claimed some intellectual credentials from Athenian schools including the Lyceum) and a renegade Roman with only the most cynical interest in heritage or culture, the schools of Athens – in particular the “peripatetic” school which dated back to Aristotle – faced challenges of identity, recruiting st…
Statistical Termination or Fewer Self-Identified Students
Students in the (Ancient) Streets, or Agent(s) Provocateur? The Liberal Arts Schools of Athens and the Hostage Crisis of 88
One of the odd angles in the story of Athens’ second greatest ‘hostage crisis’ moment is the student protest or ‘Athenian student independence’ movement, often part of how the “siege of Athens” in 88 of the old era gets its narrative. This qualifies as ‘second’ greatest if one interprets the greatest as the city’s takeover and destruction by Xerxes in 480 of that same era. In this second crisis the city’s ‘liberal arts’ schools – they were by the…
