Sacred Imagery and Ritual Landscape
Altaian rock art is increasingly seen as essential to our grasp of the character and movements of ancient cultures throughout Inner Asia. Rock art imagery often provides our only pictorial information about a preliterate society. But while surface study by itself yields valuable information, joining the examination of rock art with dirt archaeology, geology, and paleoecology provides greater opportunities for advances in our understanding of key …
Varieties of Tone
In clear and lively prose that avoids jargon, the author carefully and systematically examines the many kinds of subtly nuanced words or word-pairs of everyday discourse such as 'and'-'but', 'before'
‘Doggie’ and ‘Bunny’
Another of Dummett’s varieties of tone is presented by the pair ‘rabbit’ and ‘bunny’. Okay. ‘Beauty’ and ‘loveliness’, perhaps. But ‘rabbit’ and ‘bunny’? What could possibly be of philosophical interest with the likes of these? I must co…
The very idea of design
This paper argues for the proposition that there is fundamental incoherence in the idea of a divine designer. Such a being would have to have intentions and thoughts prior to designing and making a world. But it is a necessary truth that thought – of the complex and articulated kind necessary for the design of a cosmos – presupposes possession of language. It is further necessarily true that language is impossible, save for beings who inhabit a p…
Adverbs in performatives
I herein present a new case for the truth-evaluability of performative utterances. My argument is based on the observation that their main verb is commonly modified by a descriptive adverb that renders the entire utterance true or false. Thus: “I wholeheartedly promise to attend the banquet”, “I seriously warn you that that bull is dangerous”, or “I strenuously object, Your Honor”. The crux of my argument has to do with the validity of the follow…
