  • Arroyo Sequit Revisited

    Richard Ciolek-Torello, Donn R Grenda•ARTICLE•California Archaeology•2016•References: 2

Between February 25 and March 2, 2003, archaeologists from Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), under contract to California State Parks, completed an archaeological survey and testing program within the area of potential effects for a proposed visitors’ center and concession store in Leo Carrillo State Park. The proposed store is adjacent to CA-LAN-52, a well-known prehistoric archaeological site and the location of Arroyo Sequit, an important ethn…

  • Living in the Ballona Wetlands of the Southern California Coast

    Open Access•Richard Ciolek-Torello, Jeffrey A Homburg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Wetland Archaeology•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 5

Over twenty years of archaeological research in the Ballona wetlands, California, USA, has provided the opportunity to reconstruct how settlement responded to landscape change in this dynamic environment over the last 8000 years. Analyses of stratigraphy, radiocarbon dates, and paleoecological indicators (foraminifera, ostracods, molluscs, diatoms, silicoflagellates, and pollen) from core samples indicate that sea level rise caused the Ballona to…

  • Defining Level 1 at Malaga Cove (CA-LAN-138), California

    Mark Q Sutton, Donn R Grenda•ARTICLE•California Archaeology•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Since its primary excavation in the 1930s, the Malaga Cove site has been entangled in controversy regarding its stratigraphy, the merit of its Level 1 assemblage, and the age of Level 1. Having a portion of the original field catalog and unpublished photographs and maps from the site, coupled with an analysis of the published data, we were able to address each of these issues. We conclude that the stratigraphy proposed in the original report (Wal…
