  • Does Global Value Chain Participation Lead to Economic Upgrading

Open Access•Taner Turan, Halit Yanıkkaya et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2026•References: 5

This paper examines how global value chain (GVC) participation influences economic upgrading, focusing on both product upgrading and process typologies. Using highly disaggregated EXIOBASE-3 industry-level data for 49 regions between 1995 and 2022, we distinguish between backward and forward GVC linkages and account for sectoral heterogeneity. The empirical results show that GVC participation significantly enhances both product and process upgrad…

  • How the rule of law shapes trust? The role of the transplant effect and legal families

    Güler Sağlam, Halit Yanıkkaya•ARTICLE•Acta Oeconomica•2025•References: 11

We utilise instruments on legal transplantation to understand the effectiveness of the legal system. Our instrumental variables estimations suggest that successful legal transplantation fosters trust by improving the effectiveness of the legal system. I…

  • Does global value chain participation boost high technology exports

Open Access•Abdullah Altun, Ilker Ibrahim Avsar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International…•2023

This study examines the role of global value chain (GVC) participation in high technology exports using data over 120 countries during the 1995–2019 period. Our results suggest that GVC participation matters for high‐tech exports. While GVC participation with higher income countries is significantly associated with high‐tech exports, GVC participation with lower income countries has no effect. However, regardless of the origin countries, high‐tec…

  • Does the Complexity of GVC Participation Matter for Productivity and Output Growth

Open Access•Halit Yanıkkaya, Halit Yanikkaya et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Development…•2021•References: 6

This paper investigates the determinants of total factor productivity and income growth by taking into account both the position of the industry in the global value chain and the complexity of participation for the period of 1996–2009 for 40 developed and developing countries. Our estimation results clearly show that while all measures of forward GVC participations raise the total factor productivity growth of manufacturing industries, there is n…
