  • Career calling and flourishing

Open Access•Fang Guo, Xiaopeng Ren•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•2026

Career calling is regarded as the source of an individual's sense of purpose and meaning at work, and is an important element of research in the field of well-being. In this study, we investigated the mediating effects of job crafting and psychological capital on the relationship between career calling and flourishing by conducting a survey of 432 corporate employees. The results showed that career calling positively predicted flourishing; furthe…

  • An Eastern Look at a Western Dilemma

Open Access•Xinyi Xu, Dries H Bostyn et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2025

Moral judgment has been extensively studied utilizing traditional trolley-like sacrificial dilemmas. However, by building on Western philosophies and relying on WEIRD samples, this approach has potentially introduced a Western-centric bias to our understanding of the morality of sacrificial harm, by (a) assuming an inherent opposition between utilitarian and deontological morality and (b) underestimating cultural differences on the moral value of…

  • High- vs. low-stake choices in life

Pan Liu, Lin Qiu et al.•ARTICLE•Acta Psychologica Sinica•2025

  • Voluntary frontier settlement and independent agency within China

  • Detecting depression of Chinese microblog users via text analysis

Open Access•Sihua Lyu, Xiaopeng Ren et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2023

This study did not only develop a predictive model applicable to text-only social media data, but also demonstrated the importance taking cultural psychological factors and suicide related expressions into consideration in the calculation of word frequency. Our research provided a more comprehensive understanding of how lexicons related to cultural psychology and suicide risk were associated with depression, and could contribute to the recognitio…

  • Analysis of the Mediating Role of Psychological Empowerment between Perceived Leader Trust and Employee Work Performance

    Open Access•Xiaoli Liu, Xiaopeng Ren•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

High levels of trust between employees and leaders moderate the relationship between organizational management practices. • An Integrated Ecological Approach to Mapping Variations in Collectivism Within China

Open Access•Xiaopeng Ren, Xiaohui Cang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Pacific Rim Psychology•2021

Measurable regional variations in collectivism have been found across the Chinese mainland, challenging the simple classification of China as a “collectivistic society” in cross-national studies. In previous studies, a small number of distal or proximal ecological factors have been used to explain these regional variations of collectivism. However, there has been little consensus on which ecological factors best predict regional collectivism. In …

  • Teens in Rice County Are More Interdependent and Think More Holistically Than Nearby Wheat County

Open Access•Xiawei Dong, Thomas Talhelm et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychological and…•2019

China’s smallest province Ningxia sits in North Central China. Surrounded by herding cultures to the north and wheat farmers to the south, Qingtongxia is a small outpost of rice farming fed by the Yellow River. We test the hypothesis that rice-farming cultures are more interdependent by comparing high school students from Qingtongxia ( N = 190) to students in a nearby wheat district, Yuanzhou ( N = 223). Comparing two nearby counties provides a n…

  • Climato-Economic Imprints on Chinese Collectivism

Open Access•E Van De Vliert, Huadong Yang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 38

A still unsolved question is why humans create collectivism. A new theory proposes that poorer populations coping with more demanding winters or summers become more collectivist. Preliminary support comes from a province-level analysis of survey data from 1,662 native residents of 15 Chinese provinces. Collectivism is weakest in provinces with temperate climates irrespective of income (e.g., Guangdong), negligibly stronger in higher income provin…

  • Cross‐cultural development of an abridged job insecurity measure

Open Access•Cynthia Lee, Philip Bobko et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Organizational Behavior•2007•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Using four samples from the United States and China, we developed two theoretically based abridged job insecurity (JI) scales to address researcher concerns with the length of the original 57‐item scale. These two scales contained all the components of the scale originally developed and validated by Ashford et al., 1989 . Our abridged scale has 37 items (18 items for job features, 16 items for total job, and 3 items for powerlessness). We further…
