Coal mine workers in the climate transition
Transitioning away from fossil fuels poses significant challenges for coal-dependent workers and regions. While anticipating job losses is crucial for designing effective policy responses, we examine the future of coal workers across time and geographies in China and India under mitigation scenarios. We focus on mine workers who have been less studied, outnumber those in coal power plants, and are more geographically concentrated. Our approach en…
Regional heterogeneity and the role of social vulnerability in air pollution-related mortality from chronic lower respiratory diseases
Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a recognized risk factor for chronic lower respiratory diseases (CLRD) mortality. While Environmental Justice frameworks posit that socioeconomically disadvantaged populations bear disproportionate health burdens, nationwide studies using pooled estimates may mask critical geographic and seasonal heterogeneities. This study aimed to evaluate these spatiotemporal variations across the contiguous US and examine ef…
Advancing primate surveillance with image recognition techniques from unmanned aerial vehicles
Using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for surveys on thermostatic animals has gained prominence due to their ability to provide practical and precise dynamic censuses, contributing to developing and refining conservation strategies. However, the practical application of UAVs for animal monitoring necessitates the automation of image interpretation to enhance their effectiveness. Based on our past experiences, we present the Sichuan snub‐nosed mon…
Morphometric Study on the Mandible of Colobine Fossil ( Mesopithecus pentelicus ) Found in East Asia, a Comparison With Extant Taxa
A tooth‐bearing mandible fossil of a colobine monkey discovered at Shuitangba, Zhaotong, Yunnan, China, was morphometrically analyzed and compared with extant Asian colobines. Our previous qualitative and quantitative descriptions indicate that it can be safely attributed to Mesopithecus pentelicus , a Miocene fossil colobine widely found in Europe and South Asia. The present research aims to explore fossil association with extant colobines and f…
Thanatological Events and Scavenging on the Carcass of a Black Snub‐Nosed Monkey ( Rhinopithecus strykeri )
The responses of nonhuman primates towards conspecific deaths in the wild, and the activities of carnivores scavenging the corpses, are different but interconnected thanatological and ecological aspects of wildlife mortality. We report the first thanatological events observed in a wild, multilevel group of Myanmar or black snub‐nosed monkeys ( Rhinopithecus strykeri [ R. strykeri ]) and mesocarnivores scavenging on a monkey carcass in the Pianma …

Economic benefits and cost competitiveness of green hydrogen in decarbonizing China’s electricity and hard-to-electrify sectors
Green hydrogen has the potential to address two critical challenges in a zero-carbon energy system: balancing seasonal variability of solar and wind in the electricity sector, and replacing fossil fuels in hard-to-electrify sectors. In this study, focusing on China, we deploy a provincial-scale energy system planning and operation model to examine the technical and cost-optimal potential of green hydrogen to fully remove carbon-based fuels in the…
Cost-effectiveness of removing the last 10%–20% emissions of China’s power sector
Power system decarbonization is central to achieving global net-zero emissions goals. While existing studies highlight the technological complexities, flexibility challenges, and cost implications of achieving carbon neutrality, mitigating the last 10%–20% of power system emissions in China has not been sufficiently addressed. Here, we estimate the impacts of eliminating the last 10%–20% of CO 2 emissions on new capacity, the transmission network…
Fewer than 15% of coal power plant workers in China can easily shift to green jobs by 2060
Trade Cooperation Between China and Indonesia in the Context of Carbon Border Tax
In recent years, China-Indonesia relations have flourished, with trade and investment constantly expanding, showing strong resilience and vitality. However, in the face of profound changes unseen in a century, international challenges emerge one after another. The implementation of a carbon border tax will have a huge impact on international trade, and China and Indonesia will also be affected. This paper reviews the concepts and international pr…

Accelerating China’s power sector decarbonization can save lives
China, the world’s largest greenhouse gas emitter in 2022, aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The power sector will play a major role in this decarbonization process due to its current reliance on coal. Prior studies have quantified air quality co-benefits from decarbonization or investigated pathways to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from the power sector. However, few have jointly assessed the potential impacts of accelerating decar…
Preschool Children’s Physical Activity and Community Environment
Research on the relationship between preschool children's physical activity (PA) and community environment is limited and inconclusive, yet understanding this relationship is important to acquire sufficient information to guide the development of intervention programs. This study aims to objectively measure preschool children's PA and examine associations between PA and the community environments. A total of 471 preschool children aged 3-6 years …
How Noise Can Influence Experience-Based Decision-Making under Different Types of the Provided Information
Pervasive noise undermines many cognitive processes. Across two studies, we examined how noise influences experience-based decision-making and whether the nature of the information provided moderates this influence. Study 1 used the repeated choice paradigm and found that noise can significantly reduce people's performance in experience-based decision-making by increasing the likelihood of choosing the option with the lower expected value. This n…

Macaques in China
Depicting a taxonomic group's evolutionary trajectory as a function of changes in the geographical landscape and its historical distribution is critical for constructing informed conservation strategies. Based on fossil sites from the Pliocene to the Holocene, and historical records since 1175 AD, we established macaques’ dispersal pathways into and through China. These routes include internal pathways starting from the southeast corner of the Qi…
