The first 500 days of life
BACKGROUND: From conception to 6 months of age, an infant is entirely dependent for its nutrition on the mother: via the placenta and then ideally via exclusive breastfeeding. This period of 15 months--about 500 days--is the most important and vulnerable in a child's life: it must be protected through policies supporting maternal nutrition and health. Those addressing nutritional status are discussed here. OBJECTIVE AND DESIGN: This paper aims to…

Shelter Seeking Plans of Tuscaloosa Residents for a Future Tornado Event
The enhanced Fujita scale category 4 (EF4) Tuscaloosa, Alabama, tornado on 27 April 2011 produced 64 fatalities along its 130-km track. Hybrid survey/interviews were conducted with a sample of 211 Tuscaloosa-area residents to determine how the 27 April tornado might change future shelter-seeking plans. Despite a history of tornadoes in the area, only 47% of Tuscaloosa residents had shelter plans in place prior to 27 April, but 62% intend to chang…
Child Acute Malnutrition and Mortality in Populations Affected by Displacement in the Horn of Africa, 1997–2009
Drought and conflict in the Horn of Africa are causing population displacement, increasing risks of child mortality and malnutrition. Humanitarian agencies are trying to mitigate the impact, with limited resources. Data from previous years may help guide decisions. Trends in different populations affected by displacement (1997-2009) were analyzed to investigate: (1) how elevated malnutrition and mortality were among displaced compared to host pop…

Using agricultural data for timely warning to prevent the effects of drought on child nutrition in Botswana
Data from agricultural reporting systems in Botswana for the period 1978–83 are combined with data from the Ministry of Health's clinic‐based nutritional surveillance system in a retrospective analysis to investigate the usefulness of agricultural indicators for timely warning of unusually severe child malnutrition due to drought. In the arable farming areas in eastern Botswana, deficits in an index of ground water sufficiency for maize growth du…

Identifying nutritional considerations in planning a rural development project in N. Haiti
In testing methods for introducing nutritional considerations into project planning, a combined agro/economic and nutrition survey was carried out on a representative sample of 261 households from a proposed project area in north Haiti. This paper reports results of analyses to determine targetting priorities and examine whether income generation is likely to induce improvement in nutrition. It also studied differences in associations between inc…
"Questions and Answers in Whitman's "Confab
W HEN, early in this century, Basil De Selincourt spoke of Walt IV 7Whitman's poems as impromptu confab in which equal takes equal aside for a few words, he made an analogy that a number of critics have since found appropriate. They have conceived of the poetry as a rather than as a literary performance.1) Poetry, of course, cannot be literally a verbal exchange, but Whitman succeeds remarkably in creating the impression that what is in print is …
Walt Whitman's Catalogues
VV YALT WHITMAN'S DEVOTED CRITICS in the nineteenth century, such as Edward Dowden, defended the poet's use of catalogues on the grounds that the catalogues were outgrowths of the poet's democratic spirit. Dowden wrote, No single person is the subject of Whitman's song, or can be; the individual suggests a group, and the group a multitude, each unit of which is as interesting as every other unit, and possesses equal claims to recognition. Hence t…
