Malt Barley in Twentieth-Century Mexico
This article focuses on how Mexico’s brewers, backed by a collaboration of U.S. and Mexican agronomists and officials who together developed the foundations of the Green Revolution, facilitated the centralization of decision-making over new technologies of production in the malt barley industry in the mid-twentieth century. Brewers developed and enforced an extensive contract farming system dominated by a single company that gave them substantial…
Pesos and Politics
Porfirio Díaz is receiving much historical revision of late. His centralizing rule still appears to have depended on managing elites and the intensive though not necessarily pervasive use of force. However, the veneer of economic liberalism has been shattered by a host of studies demonstrating substantial state economic intervention. Race, Nation, and Market
With the recent turn to neoliberalism in Latin America, efforts to understand the power of the market have preoccupied intellectuals and politicians alike. Through a careful examination of periodicals, official publications, and published sources written by prominent liberals, social Catholics, and radicals from late Porfirian Mexico, Richard Weiner demonstrates how elites in that period were equally preoccupied with defining the impact of the ma…
The Politics of Economic Nationalism in Postrevolutionary Mexico
Economic nationalism in Mexico has typically been linked to mid‐twentieth‐century experiments with state‐led industrial protectionism. This article argues that the origins of this association lay in postrevolutionary conflicts between economic liberals and protectionists over state consolidation and industrial centralization. Within these struggles, promoters of state economic intervention as well as defenders of free trade and private enterprise…
Masculine Bonds and Modern Mothers
This article emphasizes the crucial links between gender, working-class formation, and postrevolutionary statebuilding in Mexico. During the 1940s, textile unions in Puebla defined and implemented gendered conceptions of working-class identities and beliefs about men and women's proper roles within the sexual division of labor. Union leaders employed concepts of working-class honor to foster bonds of masculinity that in turn became the foundation…
