  • Historical Archaeologies of Cognition

James Symonds, Anna Badcock et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Historical Archaeologies of…•2013

This collection of essays draws inspiration from the late James Deetz’s In Small Things Forgotten (1977). Deetz’s seminal work broke new ground by using structuralist theory to show how artefacts reflected the ‘worldviews’ or idealogies of their makers and users, and claimed that the American colonial world had been structured according to a British intellectual blueprint, the so-called ‘Georgian Order’. His central premise, that the systematic s…

Anna Badcock, Robert Johnston et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the…•2013•Cited by: 1

This chapter explores how the study of material culture brings new perspectives to protest and activism in the contemporary world. Its focus is the peace and environmental protests in Britain during the last thirty years, although the chapter also draws upon examples from other times and places. Several structures were visible in section including a probable house, two cists and the partial remains of a small corbelled structure or cell. The cists and corbelled structure were fully excavated. One cist was a long cist containing a flexed inhumation, the other was a short cist containing a crouched inhumation. The skeletal remains were very …

  • Physical Optics at the Royal Society 1660–1800

    Open Access•A W Badcock, Anna Badcock•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1962•Cited by: 4

Synopsis The years between 1660 and 1800 were important ones in the study of light. For most of the period the work, especially in this country, was largely dominated by the theories advanced by Newton; unfortunately the protagonists of these theories were much more rigid in their approach than was Newton himself. There was, in effect, almost a century of ‘rear-guard actions’ to maintain the corpuscular theory at all costs. Fortunately, the advan…
