  • Being in the minority boosts in-group love

Roman Angel Gallardo, Austin Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2025

People appreciate members of their in-group, and they cooperate with them-tendencies we refer to as in-group love. Being a member of a minority (vs. majority) is a common experience that varies both between groups in a context and within a group between contexts, but how does it affect in-group love? Across six studies, we examined when and why being in the minority boosts in-group love . In Study 1, being in the minority boosted people's appreci…

  • Finding W.S. Merwin

    Open Access•Austin Smith•ARTICLE•Transatlantica•2024

I grew up on a farm in northwestern Illinois. My dad is a poet, my mom a voracious reader. The front room of the farmhouse was rich with books. One whole wall of built-in bookcases and a few standing ones, in one of which the thin-spined poetry books were kept. I was drawn to the poems, how sparse they were, a few black words against a white page like the woods in winter. I found myself hungering for them. Just one more, I’d tell myself, reading …

    Open Access•E W Cloutman, A G Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1988•Cited by: 10•References: 2

Detailed boring records and surface levels, combined with knowledge of the rate of extension of organic deposits in the lake basin (Part 1), allow the production of a computer-generated contour map and isometric drawings of the microtopography of the area around the Star Carr site of Clark (1954) (figs 1 and 2). The site was at the mouth of a shallow gully on the southern face of a hillock of glacial till which could be reached from the higher gr…

  • New radiocarbon dates from Ireland

    Open Access•A G Smith, Austin Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•1971•Cited by: 2•References: 4

A great part of the work of the Belfast radiocarbon dating laboratory, which is in the charge of MY G. W. Pearson, has so far been connected with environmental studies. A number of dates have been obtained, however, from archaeological contexts. In this article, written with two colleagues in the Laboratory, the archaeological dates are summarized and an outline given of thepalaeoecological work in a more reasoned

  • The Context of some Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age Remains from Lincolnshire

    Open Access•A G Smith, Austin Smith•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Prehistoric…•1958•Cited by: 1•References: 8

It has been possible recently to correlate some well known Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age finds from the Ancholme Valley, north Lincolnshire, with the stratigraphy of the valley and with the pollen statistical zone scheme. A digest of the material of archaeological interest is presented here together with an account of the investigation of the site of the dugout canoe at Short Ferry, Fiskerton, near Lincoln
