From Politics to the Bench: Partisan Determinants of Support for Gubernatorial Judicial Appointments
Partisan identity increasingly structures how Americans interpret the operation of democratic institutions, including the routine procedures meant to function impartially. This study examines how partisan identity shapes public evaluations of one such procedure, gubernatorial appointments to state supreme courts during competitive election years. Using a survey experiment in which respondents evaluated a hypothetical appointment under varied part…
A regulatory pathway model of neuropsychological disruption in Havana syndrome
This computational analysis of measured neuropsychological symptoms in Havana-based diplomats proposes that these AHI symptoms may be supported in part by disruption of known neuroimmune and neurotransmission regulatory mechanisms also associated with mTBI
The Citizen and the Other: New Directions in Research on the Migration and Citizenship Nexus
Recent scholarship points to three emerging lines of research on the migration and citizenship nexus. The first unsettles assumptions of citizenship’s internal homogeneity by identifying internal lines of exclusion (Balibar 2004; Anderson 2013). This goes beyond a binary between citizenship’s inclusionary promise and constitutive exclusions to explore what Linda Bosniak (2006) has characterized as its ‘soft inside’. The second line of research ma…
Excavation of medieval graves at St Thomas' Kirk, Hall of Rendall, Orkney
In early 2005 a particularly severe storm exposed human bones on the foreshore immediately east of the ruins of St Thomas' Kirk. The subsequent excavation recovered fourteen individual inhumations. The skeletons exhibited a relatively high number of pathological conditions and evidence of a diet that included fish, meat and dairy products. Isotopic analysis confirms that one of the individuals was from either the outer Hebrides or Northern Shetla…

The Prohibition of Torture under International Law. Part 1: The Institutional Organisation
This article examines the institutional set-up of the United Nations and European organs involved in the fight against torture and evaluates their strengths and weaknesses in inducing state practice into compliance with the respective treaties and standards. Following an initial overview of both regimes, it examines in greater detail the organisation of the various bodies, including their composition and resources, before analysing the monitoring…
The Prohibition of Torture under International Law, Part 2: The Normative Content
The following article makes a critical analysis of the contribution made by the organs of the Council of Europe and the United Nations and to the elaboration of the concept of torture and thus focuses on the jurisprudence of the different bodies. The approach taken by the European organs has been different to that taken by the UN, the former generally attempting to distinguish between 'torture' and 'other ill-treatment' whilst the latter has take…
Total hip arthroplasty: Use and select complications in the US Medicare population
Use and outcomes of primary total hip arthroplasty among US Medicare recipients more than 65 years of age were investigated by means of physician and hospital claims for a 5% random sample during 1986 through 1989. Cases involving hip fracture or evidence of existing orthopedic devices in the hip were omitted. Use rates were higher for women than for men and were substantially lower for Blacks than Whites. Major complications (death, further hip …

Overcoming potential pitfalls in the use of Medicare data for epidemiologic research
We used Medicare data bases and US Census data to address two questions critical to the use of Medicare files for epidemiologic research. First, we examined the degree to which the population enrolled in the Medicare program is similar to the elderly resident population of the United States, as estimated by the US Census. We found small differences in the total population estimates but substantial differences by age and race. Second, we found tha…
