  • Health benefits of reducing aircraft pollution

Open Access•Silvia Beghelli, Augustin de Coulon et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Population Economics•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 3

This paper investigates externalities generated by air transportation pollution on health. As a source of exogenous variation, we use an unannounced 5-month trial that reallocated early morning aircraft landings at London Heathrow Airport. Our measure of health is prescribed medications spending on conditions known to be aggravated by pollution, especially sleep disturbances. We observe a significant and substantial decrease in prescribed drugs f…

  • Capital Heterogeneity and the Decline of the Labour Share

    Open Access•Mary O’Mahony, Michela Vecchi et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 65

We investigate the decline of the labour share in a world characterized by increasing heterogeneity of capital assets. Our results show that over the 1970–2007 period, the decline of the labour share has been driven mainly by Information and Communication Technology assets and is mitigated by increasing investments in R&D‐based knowledge assets. Extending to other forms of intangible capital from 1995 onwards, we find that intangible investments …

  • Bridging the gap in creative economy and ICT research

    Kai Zhao, Mary O’Mahony et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Economics•2020

Following Florida’s seminal work on the ‘creative class’ there is a great deal of interest concerning whether creativity, as an input, is important for regional growth. Answering this question requires developing a production framework that can distinguish creativity from other inputs. With data from Europe, this paper integrates the concept of information and communications technology (ICT) and the creative class into a theoretical production fu…

  • Output, Input and Productivity Measures at the Industry Level

    Open Access•Mary O’Mahony, Marcel P Timmer•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2009•Cited by: 39•References: 30

This article describes the contents and the construction of the EU KLEMS Growth and Productivity Accounts. This database contains industry-level measures of output, inputs and productivity for 25 European countries, Japan and the US for the period from 1970 onwards. The article considers the methodology employed in constructing the database and shows how it can be useful in comparing productivity trends. Although growth accounts are the organisin…

  • The Productivity Gap between Europe and the United States

Open Access•Bart Van Ark, Mary O'Mahony et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2008

Since the mid-1990s, labor productivity growth in Europe has significantly slowed compared to earlier decades. In contrast, labor productivity growth in the United States accelerated, so that a new productivity gap has opened up. This paper shows that this development is attributable to the slower emergence of the knowledge economy in Europe. We consider various explanations which are not mutually exclusive. These include lower growth contributio…

  • The global economy in the 1990s

    Open Access•Mary O''Mahony, Mary O'Mahony et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic History Review•2007

  • Public health professionals' perceptions toward provision of health protection in England

Open Access•Paul Cosford, Paul A Cosford et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2006

Whilst we studied professionals' perceptions, rather than actual responses to incidents, our study suggests that there are important areas of health protection where consistent understanding of responsibility for delivery is lacking. There are opportunities to clarify the responsibility for health protection in England, perhaps learning from the approaches used for those health protection functions where we found consistent perceptions of account…

  • Productivity, Workplace Performance and Ict

    Open Access•Nicola Matteucci, Mary O’Mahony et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 1

This paper considers the contribution of information and communications technology (ICT), to international productivity performance. It first uses an international industry data set and a growth accounting framework, to show that ICT has typically had a lower impact on productivity in Europe than in the US, although there is considerable variation within Europe. The paper also analyses the European situation in greater depth by examining micro‐ec…

  • Quantifying the Impact of ICT Capital on Output Growth

    Open Access•Mary O'Mahony, Mary O’Mahony et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 29

Using industry data for the United States and the United Kingdom, we provide new evidence on the impact of information and communications technology (ICT) capital on real output growth. The traditional industry panel data analysis fails to find a positive contribution. We argue that this is due to heterogeneity across industries, particularly in the time dimension. Pooling the data for the two countries and using a dynamic panel data estimation m…
