Kicking black images: Absent violence, unsynchronized sound and the problem of colonial labour in Trader Horn
Trader Horn (W. S. Van Dyke, 1931) has a significant place in film history because it was the first talkie filmed in Africa, and because its excess location footage provided the basis for the Tarzan franchise. This essay argues that Trader Horn has significance for film theory as well, providing a particularly revealing example of how a film's colonial ‘labour problem’ – the fact that it was made possible by black colonial labour, but needs to co…

There, behind the razor wire fences, concrete barricades, steel doors, metal bars, and thick plexiglass windows, nearly all of the manifestations of gender domination that feminist scholars and activists have traditional ly concerned themse…
Women Offenders and the Gendered Effects of Public Policy1
At 17%, women represent a significant proportion of all offenders under criminal justice supervision in the US. Drawing on the findings from their report, "Gender-Responsive Strategies: Research, Practice, and Guiding Principles for Women Offenders," the authors maintain that public policy has ignored the context of women's lives and that women offenders have disproportionately suffered from the impact of ill-informed public policy. This discussi…

Profiling Women Prisoners: Findings from National Surveys and a California Sample
As the number of women in prison in the United States continues to rise, existing descriptions of this changing population become outmoded. This article summarizes several national surveys of the current population of imprisoned women and provides preliminary findings from a larger study that profiles women prisoners in California's rapidly expanding state prison system. The Other Mr. Selby
The name of William Selby (1739-98) is a familiar one in the annals of eighteenth-century American musical history. 0. G. Sonneck, for his Early Concert Life in America (Leipzig, 1907), unearthed considerable information about Selby's organization of and performance in Boston concerts. This source has been heavily mined by other authors during the ensuing eight decades. Unfortunately, in the process, writer after writer has managed to rationalize…
