  • Commit Sociology

    Open Access•Susan Machum, Michael Clow•ARTICLE•Humanity & Society•2015•References: 1

This article elaborates how C. Wright Mills’ “sociological imagination” invites us to “commit sociology.” We argue critical thinking is the foundation of a liberal arts education, and its purpose is to have students recognize that the social world is constantly being constructed and reconstructed—how exactly depends upon the power dynamics embedded in the social, economic, and political institutions of any given time and place. Yet it is very cha…

  • Public Policy and the Success and Failure of New Technology

Michael Clow, Peter Macdonald•ARTICLE•British Journal of Canadian Studies•2004•References: 2

CONSTITUTING A GENUINE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION in the woods, the technologies and work processes of woods work in Eastern North America underwent a dramatic (and largely unstudied) transformation in the period between 1960 and the late 1980s. Motivating that development was the effort of the owners and managers of mills and their contractors to increase wood production, to decrease the costs, and to do both with fewer and fewer workers (MacDonald a…

  • What a difference a skidder makes

Peter Macdonald, Michael Clow•ARTICLE•History and Technology•2003

We examine in this paper the concurrent appearance of the first two woods machines--the skidder and forwarder. By replacing the horse they initiated the industrial revolution in tree harvesting. We describe their invention and technological development. We then assess their diffusion in the woods, revealing the greater success of the skidder. We demonstrate that this cannot be accounted for solely in terms of their respective technologies. Instea…

  • Politics and Uneven Capitalist Development The Maritime Challenge to the Study of Canadian Political Economy

    Michael Clow•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•1984•Cited by: 4

Students of Canadian political economy have tended largely to overlook the Maritimes in their accounts of economic and political development. It seems fair to say that the story of the region's rise and decline has been assumed to be of even less theoretical significance in the understanding of Canadian development than the region's plight is felt to be of national concern or importance. Thus it was probably with some surprise that most scholars …
