The Irving Whale and Environmental Governance in the Gulf of St. Lawrence
In 1970 the oil barge Irving Whale, carrying a cargo of Bunker C oil, sank to the seafloor. During the weeks that followed a portion of the oil leaked into Gulf waters. Initial plans to recover the full cargo were frustrated and the barge rested on the seafloor for a further 25 years before the eventual remediation, by lifting. Freshwater Politics in Canada
Freshwater is in great supply across much of Canada. However, competing and changing demands on its use are leading to ever more complex political arrangements. This volume offers an integrated survey of that complexity, combining historical and contemporary cases in a conceptually-informed exploration of water politics
Offshore Petroleum Politics

It points to a rich tradition of alternative and dissenting practices that is intertwined with the professional and political ort…

The Making of Eskimo Policy in Canada, 1952-62
During the 1950s, a decade of socio-economic turbulence in the arctic area of Canada, the Eskimo Affairs Committee played a significant role in shaping a new set of policy initiatives that Ottawa was framing toward Eskimos. In bringing together representatives of the major arctic field organizations, both public and private, the committee served as a corporatist device for overcoming the limitations of a colonial and underdeveloped state. The mem…
The Politics of Economic Policy
interest, then, to see how the politics of economic policy is handled in the four volumes (seven studies in all) constituting the MacDonald Commission's research on the politics of economic policy. Overall, the topics range from fiscal policy (at both national and provincial levels), to resources, income security, labour markets, and regulation. It is unfortunate that monetary policy and the central bank were not included. In this discussion the …
Working on the railway
The growing literature on corporate strategies for dealing with government focuses primarily on the organization and articulation of business interests. The processes through which the negotiations are pursued, and the factors which shape their outcomes, have drawn less attention. This paper examines the political relationship between the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. (Cominco) and Ottawa, which culminated in the signing of the Great Slave…
