The rise of nonemployer businesses in the United States
During the first two decades of the 2000s, the number of nonemployer businesses grew remarkably, far outpacing the growth in the number of employer businesses. We analyze the factors that may be driving the growth of nonemployer businesses per capita at the county level. We pay particular attention to geography, namely the rural and urban contexts and potential spatial spillovers between counties. We find that nonemployer growth is highest in pla…
Social Participation Modifies the Effect of a Structured Physical Activity Program on Major Mobility Disability Among Older Adults
Our findings suggest that baseline social participation is an important factor for the success of a PA intervention aimed at delaying mobility disability
Effect of Structured Physical Activity on Prevention of Major Mobility Disability in Older Adults
IMPORTANCE: In older adults reduced mobility is common and is an independent risk factor for morbidity, hospitalization, disability, and mortality. Limited evidence suggests that physical activity may help prevent mobility disability; however, there are no definitive clinical trials examining whether physical activity prevents or delays mobility disability. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that a long-term structured physical activity program is…
Can Attention Control Conditions Have Detrimental Effects on Behavioral Medicine Randomized Trials
OBJECTIVE: Attention control (AC) conditions are used to balance nonspecific attention in randomized trials of behavioral interventions. Very little guidance about which behavioral interventions and outcomes merit AC is available in the literature. The primary aim of the present study is to demonstrate a scenario in which use of AC in a behavioral randomized trial was unnecessary and possibly detrimental. METHODS: Exploratory analyses were perfor…
Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics—2011 Update
Each year, the American Heart Association (AHA), in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and other government agencies, brings together the most up-to-date statistics on heart disease, stroke, other vascular diseases, and their risk factors and presents them in its Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update. The Statistical Update is a valuable resource for researchers, clinicians, h…
Persistent Depressive Symptoms and Functional Decline Among Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease
OBJECTIVE: Because depressive symptoms are prevalent among patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), our goal was to study the effect of depressive symptoms over time on functional decline among patients with PAD. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of 417 patients with PAD followed annually for 2 years. A Geriatric Depression Scale Short Form (GDS-S) score >5 was considered positive for depressive symptoms. Depressive symptom…
