  • Mode variation in clausal complexity in German and Persian

    Open Access•Nico Lehmann•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2026

This paper revisits the question of mode as an influencing factor for variation in clausal complexity. In a comparative corpus study using the Lang*Reg corpus, clausal embedding is compared between the phonic and graphic mode produced by the same language users with the same linguistic content in German and Persian. The corpus study reveals that mode affects syntactic complexity in terms of clausal embedding in Persian as well as in German. Parti…

  • Right-peripheral subjects in German and Persian across registers

Open Access•Nico Lehmann, Vahid Mortezapour et al.•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2025

The right clause edge links the utterance to the larger discourse and supports interlocutors in navigating the communicative situation, making such linguistic alternatives prime candidates to be exploited for register distinction. We investigate whether right-peripheral subjects behave similar with respect to registers in the verb-final languages German and Persian, using the multi-lingual Lang*Reg corpus (Adli, Aria, Elisabeth Verhoeven, Nico Le…

  • Who Shortlists? Evidence on Gender Disparities in Hiring Outcomes

    Open Access•Almasa Sarabi, Nico Lehmann•ARTICLE•Administrative Science Quarterly•2024

A substantial body of research examines the relevance of hiring as a source of gender disparities in organizations. However, there is limited evidence on how different sets of key organizational decision makers contribute to gender disparities in hiring outcomes. To address this research gap, we exploit the staggered adoption of a new hiring process in a multinational corporation, which transferred from hiring managers to HR departments the task …

  • Verb-based restrictions on noun incorporation across languages

Open Access•Marieke Olthof, Eva Van Lier et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Typology•2021

Although some characteristics of incorporating verbs and non-incorporating verbs have been proposed in previous studies, little systematic cross-linguistic research has been done on restrictions on the types of verbs that incorporate nouns. Knowledge about possible verb-based restrictions on noun incorporation may, however, provide important insights for theoretical approaches to noun incorporation, in particular regarding the question to what ex…

  • Explaining and promoting participation in demand response programs

    Open Access•Daniel Sloot, Nico Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 16

Demand response programs aim to increase flexibility in electricity consumption. Yet, their success hinges on a sufficient level of consumer participation, which makes it important to understand the factors that motivate participation. Though it is often assumed that consumers participate in demand response programs for the potential financial benefits, these programs can also generate collective environmental benefits, such as an increase in the…

  • Empirical Evidence on the Role of Proxy Advisors in European Capital Markets

    Joerg-Markus Hitz, Nico Lehmann•ARTICLE•European Accounting Review•2018

Responding to regulators’ requests and filling a void in the academic literature, this paper provides comprehensive empirical evidence on the role of proxy advisors in 14 European countries. Exploiting coverage data and using content analysis of proxy voting reports by Institutional Shareholder Services and Glass Lewis, we provide descriptive analyses of proxy advisors’ firm coverage, the variation and determinants of voting recommendations, the …
