  • Failing into ‘Aimperial’ Space

    Open Access•Allen Fromherz•ARTICLE•The Journal of Imperial &…•2026

The Gulf is an “aimperial” space at the “center of the world.” It is neither anti-imperial, it benefits from trade linking empires, nor on the frontier, its space is well known. Instead, the peoples of the Gulf have avoided outright control by any single empire by linking them and adapting to the harsh geographical realities of deserts, marshes and mountains. Ruled by merchant princes and fueled by customs dues on trade, Gulf peoples and Gulf eco…

Dominique Valérian ranks among most important historians of the medieval economic history of the Mediterranean. He has changed conventional views on the role of the Maghrib in the medieval history of the Middle Sea. In his conclusion, Akhtar states that he aims to show how different groups during these different golden ages answered the following question: “What constituted sound models of political leadership …

  • The Economics of Ascetic Encounter

    Allen J Fromherz, Allen Fromherz•ARTICLE•English Language Notes•2018

I would argue that “Mediterranean religion” is a functional category for a host of reasons. The common Abrahamic root of the three main faiths in medieval Mediterranean society is obvious. When compared to other bodies of water in Eurasia, such as the Indian Ocean, or even the Persian Gulf, the Mediterranean is not as diverse as it is often portrayed. In few other Eurasian seas has one category of faith (Abrahamic monotheism) dominated for so man…

Despite the calamities of the fourteenth century, the Black Death, the disintegration of political power, and the destructive rivalry between North African and Andalusī rulers, the correspondence of two scholars and ministers, Ibn al-Khaṭīb and Ibn Khaldūn, reveals a network of intellectual contacts maintained above the fray. As Ibn al-Khaṭīb’s famous essay, the “Art of Being a Minister,” made clear, the intelligentsia saw itself as both within a…
