Paper Party
The Publicity Department of the Austrian Fatherland Front served the Ständestaat regime (1933–38). An elaborate organization on paper, the Fatherland Front's actual work was bound up in the performance of para-fascism and the surveillance of opposing parties. Each of these modes of being mutually reinforced the need for the other and created a unique self-awareness of failure within the movement. As such, the Publicity Department offers a microco…
Feeling(s) Caught Between the Austrian First Republic and Fascism
What if fascism were a feeling first and only later a category of political history? The history of emotions offers scholars of Austria a unique lens with which to assess and explore the Ständestaat period (1933/34–1938) in a way that decenters terminology and instead questions affective economies. This article argues that Austrian para-fascism might better be understood through the emotional regimes, communities, and frontiers created in the 193…

Sexual Knowledge
Vienna's unique intellectual, political, and religious traditions had a powerful impact on the transformation of sexual knowledge in the early twentieth century. Whereas turn-of-the-century sexology, as practiced in Vienna as a medical science, sought to classify and heal individuals, during the interwar years, sexual knowledge was employed by a variety of actors to heal the social body: the truncated, diseased, and impoverished population of the…
E van B urr B ukey . Juvenile Crime and Dissent in Nazi Vienna, 1938–1945
In 1999, the Viennese Municipal and Provincial archives inadvertently shredded many of the court records from the Nazi era. In his new book, Evan Burr Bukey uses what remains of these records, supplemented with those from the Documentation Archives of the Austrian Resistance, to recreate the judicial landscape of juvenile crime between 1938 and 1945. The result is a fascinating entry point into a period most Austrians would rather forget. Studyin…

Ralph M. Leck. Vita Sexualis
German jurist Karl Heinrich Ulrichs (1825–1895) is enjoying a renaissance of sorts among English-speaking scholars. His twelve works exploring same-sex love are now translated, and his name is asserted as a forerunner of homosexual rights. In his energetic book Vita Sexualis: Karl Ulrichs and the Origins of Sexual Science, Ralph M. Leck returns Ulrichs to his original struggle—against Prussian militarism, imperialism, and sexual politics—and argu…
