  • Humanitarian and government support and mental health among refugees in Ugandan settlements, 2021

Open Access•Leah E Roberts, Wilford Kirungi et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2026

Limited research exists on mental health among displaced populations in sub-Saharan Africa. As one of the largest hosts of refugees worldwide, Uganda provides an opportunity to conduct research and examine health outcomes in this context. This study aimed to understand which factors were associated with probable depression and anxiety among refugees in Uganda and which forms of support correlate with better mental health in this population. The 2…

  • Investigating the Associations between Drought, Poverty, High-Risk Sexual Behaviours, and HIV Incidence in Sub-Saharan Africa

Open Access•Adam Trickey, Leigh F Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2024

Climate change is increasing the likelihood of drought in sub-Saharan Africa, where HIV prevalence is high. Drought could increase HIV transmission through various mediating mechanisms; we investigated these associations. We used data on people aged 15-59 from Population-Based HIV Impact Assessment surveys from 2016 in Eswatini, Lesotho, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. Survey data were geospatially linked to precipitation data for 2014-2016, with l…

  • Associations between HIV-related knowledge and discriminatory attitudes in Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

Open Access•Elizabeth A Yonko, Andrea Löw et al.•ARTICLE•Stigma and Health•2023

  • How does HIV-related stigma correlate with HIV prevalence in African countries? Distinct perspectives from individuals living with and living without HIV

Open Access•Arlette Simo Fotso, Connor Wright et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

The results indicate that among people not living with HIV, subnational HIV prevalence was negatively associated with discriminatory attitudes and prejudice towards PLWH, but HIV prevalence was positively associated with self-reported internalized stigma among PLWH. These results provide insight on how resources could be invested to reduce HIV related stigma among both PLWH and those not living with HIV

  • Prevalence of and factors associated with late diagnosis of HIV in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

Open Access•Andreas D Haas, Elizabeth Radin et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

Introduction Late diagnosis of HIV (LD) increases the risk of morbidity, mortality, and HIV transmission. We used nationally representative data from population-based HIV impact assessment (PHIA) surveys in Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe (2015–2016) to characterize adults at risk of LD and to examine associations between LD and presumed HIV transmission to cohabiting sexual partners. Methods We estimated the prevalence of LD, defined as CD4 count R…

  • Improving the benefits of HIV testing and referrals in large household surveys through active linkages to care

Michael Grasso, Ndapewa Hamunime et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2021

In household-based surveys that include rapid HIV testing services (HTS), passive referral systems that give HIV-positive participants information about how and where to access ART but minimal follow-up support from survey staff may result in suboptimal linkage. In the 2017 Namibia Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (NAMPHIA), we piloted a system of active linkage to care and ART (ALCART) that utilized the infrastructure of existing community…

The Jews who lived in the Lodz (Litzmannstadt) ghetto endeavored in a variety of written ways to document their experiences for later generations. Photographers who lived in the ghetto also helped capture on film the daily reality of those who lived there. In this way, the foundation was laid for a later investigation of the ghetto—one from the perspective of the victims, who wanted to ensure that the perpetrators would not be able to monopolize …
