  • Clifton Hood. In Pursuit of Privilege

    Open Access•Joseph Varga•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2018

In The Making of the English Working Class (1963), E. P. Thompson famously remarked that the English working class was not conjured to meet the needs of the newly developing capitalist system, but was rather “present at its own making,” as an active agent that drew upon its own traditions, social relations, customs, and skills to form a sometimes cohesive yet often fractious class of workers who could act in their own best interests (Thompson, 10…

  • Global Problems, Local Solutions

Open Access•Khadija Khaja, Joseph Vargas et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Social Work•2018

The inspiration for this special issue came at a faculty retreat held on a glorious late summer day on a bucolic campus. • Dispossession is Nine-tenths of the Law

    Open Access•Joseph Varga•ARTICLE•Labor Studies Journal•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 16

This article uses a comparison of the passage of RTW laws in Indiana in 1957 and 2012 to examine the process that sociologist Guy Standing and others have termed precariatization, the formation of a new type of insecure labor force. Through a comparison of the passage of the laws and the resistance of organized labor in both cases, the article…

  • More Powerful Than Dynamite

    Joseph J Varga, Joseph Varga•ARTICLE•Monthly Review•2013

Thai Jones, More Powerful than Dynamite: Radicals, Plutocrats, Progressives, and New York's Year of Anarchy (New York: Walker and Company, 2012), 416 pages, $28, hardback. The setting of Thai Jones's wonderful book will be all too familiar to those involved in direct action politics: a liberal urban administration, a radical protest movement, disparities of wealth deepened by economic crisis. A series of incidents sets off a new phase of demonstr…
