  • Comics Culture and Roy Lichtenstein Revisited

    Open Access•Hugo Frey, Jan Baetens•ARTICLE•Art History•2019

While to date no single standard historical work has been written on the intersections between pop art and comics, two common interpretations have crystallized, neither of which represents the last word on the matter. On the one hand, significant scholarly attention has been paid to ‘Batmania’, in particular how in January 1966 ABC television launched the pop art infused miniseries adaptation of the comic strip. As the star actor from the series,…

  • Louis Malle and the Historians

    Open Access•Hugo Frey•ARTICLE•History Compass•2005

This short article discusses how Louis Malle's life and work has become a common subject for historians of France. It suggests that this is because of the importance of his fictional treatment of life in Nazi‐occupied France, Lacombe Lucien (released 1974). The piece concludes by inviting scholars to now reflect on Malle's other films that are of comparable importance. For example, there are his treatments of 1950s France or May ’68, as well as h…

  • Contagious colonial diseases in Hergé's The adventures of Tintin

    Hugo Frey•ARTICLE•Modern & Contemporary France•2004•Cited by: 3

This article analyses the portrayal of illness and disease in two well‐known Tintin books that were published in the late 1940s. It underlines how work from Hergé in this period continued to be marked with an imperialist mindset. In particular, it is important to appreciate that publications such as Les 7 Boules de cristal and Le Temple du soleil lend implicit support to common European myths of reverse, or ‘retro’, colonial invasion. Similarly, …

  • History and memory in Franco-Belgian Bande Dessinée ( BD )

    Hugo Frey•ARTICLE•Rethinking History•2002•Cited by: 1

This essay explores how French comic strips (BDs) have been marked by contemporary trends in the historical memory of the Vichy regime. It offers an interpretation of BDs in the light of Henry Rousso’s famous study Le Syndrome de Vichy. In so doing, the essay introduces British and North American readers to sources which are little known beyond Paris and Brussels and that are normally overlooked by students of French literature, ‘with a capital L…
