Papal communications and historical writing in Angevin England
This article examines the role of papal communications in historical writing in England under the Angevin kings (1154–1216). Taking the examples of Gervase of Canterbury, Roger of Howden and Herbert of Bosham, it demonstrates a variety of responses to papal communications between the curia and England. By the late twelfth century such communications – particularly papal letters – had become an integral part of the material of historical writing. …

Marcus Bull. Eyewitness and Crusade Narrative
In Eyewitness and Crusade Narrative: Perception and Narration in Accounts of the Second, Third and Fourth Crusades, Marcus Bull draws attention to an assertion in Ambroise’s Estoire de la Guerre Sainte: though some say that King Richard I’s expedition to the East achieved nothing, Ambroise writes, “They criticize what they do not know and where they did not set their feet. But we who were there saw it” (quoted on 232–233). Such an appeal to the a…
Writing History in the Anglo-Norman World
The contexts for the works of eleventh and twelfth-century historians are here brought to the fore. History was a subject popular with authors and readers in the Anglo-Norman world. The volume and richness of historical writing in the lands controlled by the kings of England, particularly from the twelfth century, has long attracted the attention of historians and literary scholars, whilst editions of works by such writers as Orderic Vitalis, Joh…
The Historians of Angevin England
Our impression of late twelfth and early thirteenth century England derives mainly from the work of contemporary historians, such as Roger of Howden, Gerald of Wales, and Gervase of Canterbury. This volume shows how these writers produced their original, engaging histories, exploring the insights they provide into medieval attitudes and mentalities.
Ralph of Diceto
This chapter looks at the work of Ralph of Diceto, paying particular attention to his organizational methods, his interest in historical precedents, and his political stance. Ralph wrote a history of recent events, the Ymagines Historiarum , which has been noted for its cautious and balanced approach to controversial events. He has been characterized as a ‘civil service’ historian, interested in government and in law. Here it is argued that Ralph…
The Cult of St Thomas Becket in the Plantagenet World, c.1170-c.1220
The extraordinary growth and development of the cult of St Thomas Becket is investigated here, with a particular focus on its material culture. Thomas Becket - the archbishop of Canterbury cut down in his own cathedral just after Christmas 1170 - stands amongst the most renowned royal ministers, churchmen, and saints of the Middle Ages. He inspired the work of medieval writers and artists, and remains a compelling subject for historians today. Ye…

Eadmer's Vita Anselmi
Eadmer's Vita Anselmi has been recognised as a ground-breaking work of ‘intimate biography’. In this paper it is argued that other important aspects of Eadmer's purpose and method have been neglected. Eadmer's literary objective was not only to represent Anselm's personality and deeds but to interpret, justify and exalt them. Furthermore, his approach involves, in addition to accurate and detailed description, the employment of such literary devi…
