The Black Sea in the Mediterranean economy.
Studies of trade between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean have traditionally been focused on the export of grain, slaves and processed fish. Grain exports from the Black Sea to Athens are frequently mentioned in the textual sources, as are slaves (e.g., the Scythians who served as a police force in Athens). The trade in fish products (salted fish and garum) is occasionally mentioned in the texts, but the archaeological evidence is somewhat sel…

Were Spartan Boys Whipped to Death
During the Roman period, the whipping contest at the altar of Artemis Orthia attracted numerous visitors who flocked to Sparta in order to witness the spectacle of young boys being whipped till the blood flowed, the last boy standing being declared the winner. Among the visitors was Plutarch, who, in his biography of the Spartan lawgiver Lycurgus, relates how he has seen boys dying under the whip at Artemis’ altar. Cicero, too, has witnessed the …
Cassius Dio’s Bithynian Background
Located at the interface of Europe and Asia and blessed with a favourable climate, Roman Bithynia was a prosperous province with a diverse economy and home to important cities, one of which was Dio’s hometown Nicaea at the eastern end of lake Ascanius. For generations the Cassii had ranked among the leading families of Nicaea. Yet Dio does not have a great deal to say about events in Bithynia and when he does, the action more often takes place in…
North Anatolian Rivers and the Chronology of Xenophon s Anabasis
The dating of the expedition of the Ten Thousand to Persia and their long march home to Greece described in the Anabasis of Xenophon has been debated for over a century. Some researchers now favour a late departure from Sardis over the early date preferred by earlier commentators. One further argument for a late chronology which has failed to attract scholarly attention can be found in the description of four north Anatolian rivers offered by the…
An Ancient Route Through the Tavşan Mountains
Burası on yedinci yüzyıla kadar kullanımda kalmıştır zira Evliya Çelebi Seyahatname’sinde b…
Fake News from the Past – Lessons For the Future
There is agreement amongst media commentators that the spread of so-called fake news poses a serious threat to democratic society, and as history educators, we have an obligation to help stem the rising tide of misinformation

Dio Chrysostom in Exile
In the opening chapter of his thirty-sixth oration, Dio Chrysostom tells his listeners how in the course of a journey ‘through the lands of the Scythians to that of the Getae’, he stopped over in the city of Borysthenes (Olbia) ‘in the summer after my exile’ (τὸ θέρος ... μετὰ τὴν φυγήν). Dio had been exiled by Domitian, probably in a.d. 83 or 84; since his exile ended after the death of Domitian in September 96, it is generally accepted that his…
Herodian on Greek and Roman Failings
This chapter examines the Herodian as a Greek intellectual living and writing within the Roman Empire. Herodian's ideal society appears to be one where able men can make a career for themselves, provided they perform their tasks capably, mind their business and do not let themselves be led astray by excessive ambition. Time and again, Herodian has been compared to his near-contemporary Dio Cassius, and invariably to the latter's advantage. As an …
Urban Life and Local Politics in Roman Bithynia
Urban Life and Local Politics in Roman Bithynia
