Dr Philip Nelson, who died in 1953, was an antiquary and collector who lived in Liverpool. One of the highlights of the collections of classical sculpture in the World Museum, part of National Museums Liverpool, is a group of statuettes and busts acquired by Nelson from the 12th Lord Kinnaird and formerly housed in Rossie Priory, near Perth in Scotland. Although Nelson bought only two sculptures from the first auction of sculptures from the Rossi…

  • Funerary Epigrams of Ancient Greece: Reflections on Literature, Society and Religion

Marta González González, Duncan Sayer et al.•BOOK•Funerary Epigrams of Ancient Greece•2019

Taking a wide selection of Greek funerary epigrams from the 6th to 4th centuries BC, this volume considers their historical and chronological contexts to draw out information about the society that created them. Using both Hansen’s corpus of epigrams and wider examples, it gives priority to those cases where the whole monument ensemble is preserved, both text and image, enabling a much better understanding of the significance of the texts

"Taking a wide selection of Greek funerary epigrams from the 6th to 4th centuries BC, this volume considers their historical and chronological contexts to draw out information about the society that created them. A thematic structure within a broader chronological framework provides a valuable lens on the epigrams, allowing readers to compare particular types across the time period. The focus is on epitaphs of individuals in the most significant …

One of the finest collections of Etruscan artifacts outside of Italy was begun in the 19th century by Joseph Mayer, goldsmith, of Liverpool. His donation of the collection became the core of Liverpool Museum, now World Museum, and has been augmented over the years by additional gifts and other acquisitions, such as those from the Wellcome Collection and Norwich Castle Museum. Much of the original material came from the necropolis of Vulci (Canino…

  • Images of the defeated: A good death in late Bronze Age Greece

    Georgina Muskett•ARTICLE•Journal of Conflict Archaeology•2016•References: 6

Warriors engaged in combat are characteristic images of Late Bronze Age Greece, depicting both the victors and the defeated. An examination of Early Mycenaean and Mycenaean images of the defeated, and of the presentation of the deceased by their funerary offerings, suggests that a death in battle was not perceived as a disgrace. Furthermore, a display of respect towards the fallen enemy may have enhanced the victor. The surviving images from Late…

  • Rites of Passage for Young Children in Mycenaean Greece

    Georgina Muskett•ARTICLE•Childhood in the Past•2008•Cited by: 3

This paper considers whether there is any evidence of rites of passage, the ceremonies commemorating signi ficant stages in the life of a child, which can be identi fied in Mycenaean Greece. The conclusion is drawn that, despite a comparative scarcity of evidence from the Mycenaean period, there were events in a Mycenaean child's life which can plausibly be compared with landmarks in the life of Athenian children in the Classical period. Keywords:…
