Museum Care of Indigenous Cradles
Traditional cradles are important objects in many Indigenous American cultures. A historical tendency of museums to overlook Indigenous perspectives on proper object handling and display has often resulted in improper care of culturally sensitive objects in museum collections. Through interviews at the Natural History Museum of Utah, we consulted members of Indigenous communities in and around Utah to ascertain culturally appropriate practices fo…
Re-Evaluating the Dietary Significance of Gambel Oak Acorns ( Quercus gambelii ) in the Great Basin, Colorado Plateau, and Southwest
Ethnographic evidence documents the exploitation of Gambel oak ( Quercus gambelii ) acorns as a food resource in the Great Basin, Southwest, and Colorado Plateau. However, a paucity of identified macro- and micro-botanical acorn remains in the archaeological record has resulted in a critical underestimation of the significance of the resource for Indigenous groups in these regions. This paper reports data from 18 hours of experimental Gambel oak …
Environmental Drivers of Wealth Inequality among Ancestral Puebloan Farmers in Bears Ears National Monument
Here, we explore variation in a new record of archaeological house-floor sizes from the southwestern United States relative to spatially explicit time series estimates of local precipitation. Our results show that inequality becomes more severe during periods of high precipitation. This supports the theory suggesting that inequality may emerge where resources are dense, predictable, and clumped within heterogenous and circumscribed environments. …
Late Holocene Size Variation of Mytilus californianus Remains from Shelter Cove (CA-HUM-182), Northern California
Here we evaluate variation in Mytilus californianus size from CA-HUM-182, comparing patterns with those from Punta Gorda Rock Shelter that suggested sustainable resource management. Using a novel equation, we reconstruct the size profile of the assemblage over time and provide a new age-depth chronology. Results indicate no decrease in size over time; instead, increases are observed from initial harvest (∼730 cal BP) to site abandonment (∼260 cal…
