  • Humaniser l'humanité

Fred Dallmayr, Fred R Dallmayr et al.•ARTICLE•Diogène•2013

The essay seeks to vindicate the importance of the humanities or liberal arts deriving from their crucial contribution to the “humanization of humanity”. This vindication is timely in view of the wide-spread curtailment of humanistic or liberal education in many institutions of higher learning. It is also timely as a pedagogical antidote to the fascination with violence in our world (which often culminates in “crimes against humanity”). In a firs…

  • Subjectivité et solidarité

    In-Suk Cha, Jeanne Delbaere‐Garant et al.•ARTICLE•Diogène•2013

The notion of subjectivity with which the argument will be carried out may be defined as our ability to reflect critically, to think creatively and to act resolutely in our relation to society and nature. Some essential marks of subjectivity are illustrated through an example taken from rescue operation conducted in the fall of 2010 for the miners trapped in deep underground at the San Jose mine site in Chile for 69 days. With the science and tec…

  • Le droit coutumier chez les Chagga du Kilimandjaro

Sally Falk Moore, Jeanne Delbaere‐Garant et al.•ARTICLE•Diogène•2013•References: 1

The term “customary law” has many layers of meaning when applied to the African experience. This paper gives a vivid example of a practice of the Chagga people of Kilimanjaro which they regard as a matter of custom. But the paper also makes clear that the idea of customary law has had changing significance in the British colonial period, in the post-colonial present, and in anthropological theory. The paper presents some of the concepts which Pro…

  • Corps, cerveau et beauté la place de l'esthétique dans le domaine de l'esprit

Zdravko Radman, Jeanne Delbaere‐Garant et al.•ARTICLE•Diogène•2012

This article represents a programmatic attempt to relate the subject of aesthetics to the wider scope of issues concerning the nature of the human mind. In addition to a criticism of the aesthetics’ isolationism, it provides an outline of orthodox cognitivism and also of the more recent philosophy of embodiment, and sees the latter as a natural context for aesthetic concerns. The author argues that not only may the results of brain research be in…

  • Roue de la fortune et grain de moutarde

Gao Jianping, Gao Jian-ping et al.•ARTICLE•Diogène•2012

The difference between European and Chinese traditions of painting has been widely discussed. This study argues that this difference can be seen in the different use of copybooks: a source from which many interesting theories can be developed. The paper compares several medieval European books, including Villard de Honnecourt’s Constructions: The Wheel of Fortune, with the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting from China, and argues that, while …

  • L'art de connaître un paysage

Arnold Berleant, Jeanne Delbaere‐Garant et al.•ARTICLE•Diogène•2012

The arts can contribute to an intimate, engaged experience of landscape, and this process can itself be construed as an art. Experiencing landscape through the arts and as an art, the art of environmental appreciation, offers a clearer understanding of landscape, of environment, and of art, as well as what it is to "know" in the context of environmental experience. This essay offers a new fabric for understanding the relation of art and landscape…
