The territorial explanation of populism
The research applies the analytical model of the ‘Geography of Discontent' to examine the populist vote in the Bassano area. The findings suggest that the relationship between territory and populist voting is not as strong and clearcut as argued by the literature. Furthermore, the study focuses on an emerging new ‘conurbation' that goes beyond the Bassano area to include also those of Cittadella and Castelfranco. This may represent a novel case f…
Pasinetti’s Structural Dynamics and Institutional Analysis
Elaborating on the Demand-Side of Economic Development
The article aims at integrating Schumpeter’s focus on innovation, entrepreneurship, and qualitative change with a theory of the demand side. It argues that, by remaining close to Schumpeter’s “methodological core”, it is possible to go forward with Schumpeter’s seminal contribution. The new perspective deals with innovation and demand together, therefore, laying out the basics for a theory of the demand side, a goal that despite the numerous atte…
The Stagnation Tendencies of Neoliberalism
In his 2012 book, From Financial Crisis to Stagnation, Thomas Palley argued that the financial crisis of 2008 would be likely to result in a period of long-term stagnation. Both the crisis and the predicted stagnation, Palley argued, were the outcomes of policies pursued since the 1980s; the persistence of those policies explains the stagnation. Underpinning the policies and their consequences are the flaws of the neoliberal macro model and the p…
Growth, Normal Capacity Utilization and the Long-Run Saving Ratio
In a recent paper Attilio Trezzini presents an explanation of the saving ratio that does not rely on normal capacity utilization positions. Trezzini instead focuses on the fluctuations of consumption and investment. But that very focus, I argue, requires a different kind of approach. Once the traditional theory of saving is discarded, the ‘indeterminacy’ of the saving ratio opens the way to an analysis of the evolution of consumption, and of how …
Towards a Theory of the Consumption–Growth Relationship
As suggested by the title the starting point of the paper is Harrod ‘s essay Towards A Dynamic Economics (1948) and more in general the question posed by the Harrod-Domar model. Its main purpose is to contribute to the analysis of dynamics, that is, the analysis of the growth process within industrial market economies. The approach presented stems out of the problems raised by the attempt to extend to the long- run Keynes ’ theory of income deter…
Development Economics
The paper is part of a larger project aimed at revitalizing what Paul Krugman has called "high development theory." It examines the roots of development economics, focusing on the seminal contributions of Europeans who emigrated to the UK and the United States in the 1930s. That body of theory became very influential in the 1950s and 1960s. It was virtually pushed out of economic theory and research by the new trends in economic analysis. Krugman…
Transformational Growth in the 1990s
Our aim is to understand how the process of transformational growth during the 1990s shaped the boom and bust of the New Economy. From the debate on new technologies and productivity growth, we move on to consider the questions raised by technological developments of the 1990s. Our focus is on the three-way relationship between the development of information and communications technologies, structural change and economic growth, as the key determ…
Globalization Reconsidered
The paper focuses on the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) that has received little attention in the debate and criticism of globalization. The empirical evidence indicates that Direct Investment is concentrated in a few countries, confirming a selective integration of certain areas into the world economy. It highlights also the importance of the Trans-Atlantic connection, with Europe as the larger source of direct investment and the US shifting to…
Stiglitz on Globalization and Development with an Eye to Keynes
Joseph Stiglitz has laid out many of the issues central to the debate on globalization in a compelling story in a recent influential book. Globalization has become a contentious issue because the economic policies advocated for and, at times, almost imposed upon developing countries by international organizations such as the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization are based on misconceptions about how market s…
