Francophone Dance Studies in Quebec
This article traces the current transformations in francophone dance studies research in Quebec. Long shaped by French, European, and Anglo-American theoretical traditions, the discipline has undergone a major shift since the 2010s under the influence of social movements such as Black Lives Matter, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and #MeToo. These contexts have prompted researchers to question the colonial foundations, power relations, a…
Embodying Dances of India in France
This article examines the use of Hubert Godard’s movement analysis alongside a micro-phenomenological approach—drawing on Pierre Vermersch’s explicitation interview and Claire Petitmengin’s subsequent elaborations—to explore the embodied experience of a “dance-traveler” engaging with traditional Indian dance. Focusing on the case of Brigitte Chataignier, the study investigates how her previously unspoken and often unnoticed subjective experience …
When the Masculine Elite is at the Table
This article studies the symbolic and social dimensions of elite gastronomy as an instrument of social distinction that legitimizes domination. My analysis focuses on the Club des Cent, a private members’ dining club which was founded in Paris in 1912 and is only open to men. The club meets every Thursday lunchtime at a Paris restaurant for a meal organized by one of its members. This article draws on fieldwork, including interviews, and the arch…
Cooking and Art
This article addresses the relationship between professional culinary excellence and art. Whilst in existing scholarship philosophical approaches suppose an ontological link between these two categories and sociological research employs the concept of “artification,” my analysis is based on field theory. I consider cooking as a field of cultural production, which allows for the constructivist approach behind the legitimization of cooking to be tr…
Thirty Years of National Treasures
Myth- and Monarch-Making
Louis XIV is one of the most captivating figures in French history despite his myth sitting uneasily alongside a modern Republican France. Louis XIV’s rarely read memoirs provide unique insight into the monarch’s role, demonstrating the tension between God-given right and the day-to-day duties of being a king. Novelist Claire de Duras used the memoirs to compile Pensées de Louis XIV (1827), a collection of seventy selected quotations. This articl…
