Teachers’ and children’s personal epistemologies for moral education
Educational policy for citizenship in the early years in Australia
Understandings of young children as active and capable citizens, while evident in discourses of early childhood education and research, are not widely reflected in the policy for the early years of schooling in Australia. This paper makes an analysis of the gaps and tensions between discourses of young children as active citizens and policy for citizenship education at the national level in Australia and at the Queensland State level. There is a …
Education and Learning for the Elderly
This paper is concerned with the general issues of ageing, learning, and education for the elderly. It also examines the more specific issues of why, how and what elders want to learn. The world's population is ageing rapidly. For example, it is estimated that by 2020 20% of the population in the USA will be 65 years old and over. It is predicted that 24% of the Hong Kong population will be over 65 years old by 2025 (Bartlett & Phillips, 1995 Bar…
Epistemological beliefs in child care
Background . The quality of child care is of social and economic significance worldwide. The beliefs that child care workers hold about knowing and knowledge (epistemological beliefs) influence the quality of their professional work. However, attention to epistemological beliefs is rarely a focus in vocational education programmes. Aim . The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of child care students' epistemological beliefs. Sample(s)…
Older Women's Fears of Violence
Women's fear of violence can impact negatively on their active participation in life. An ageing survey conducted with 2,620 Australian respondents aged 50 to 90 years examined aspects of work, learning, social, spiritual and emotional status, health, vision, home, life events, demographics, and asked an open-ended question about what being actively engaged in life meant. Ordinal regression was carried out on two dependent variables: wanting and n…
Dissonance between Conceptions of Learning and Ways of Learning for Indigenous Australian University Students
This article reports on a phenomenographic investigation into conceptions of learning for 15 Indigenous Australian university students over the three years of their degree courses. The ways in which they went about learning were also investigated along with the relationship between individual students' 'core' conceptions of learning and the ways in which they learned. Results indicated that their conceptions and ways of learning were similar in s…
Changes in conceptions of learning for Indigenous Australian university students
Background. Conceptions of learning have been investigated for students in higher education in different countries. Some studies found that students' conceptions change and develop over time while others have found no changes. Investigating conceptions of learning for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander university students is a relatively new area of research. Aims. This study set out to investigate conceptions of learning for Aborig…
Change in knowledge of learning and teaching through journal writing
This paper is the third in a series addressing the integration of naive and informed knowledge of learning and teaching by preservice teachers. Previous papers have explored and discussed pre- and post-unit written statements about learning as well as transcripts of stimulated recall interviews with students in response to a videotape of one of their teaching lessons during teaching practicum. This paper focuses on the analysis of learning journa…
Young children's representations and strategies for addition
This is a report of a study of the representations and strategies for addition, used by a sample of 55 children in years 1,2 and 3 in three schools in Brisbane. Children were presented with operations represented in symbols and asked to choose how to solve the task and explain their procedures as they worked. The teachers were interviewed to determine the representations that they were introducing. The results show a general developmental sequenc…
Information processing and the learning context
Biggs (1993) asked, 'What framework has more to offer researchers, teachers, and staff developers: that derived from IP, or from SAL?' His response was to argue that the Student Approaches to Learning perspective best accounts for the context specific motive and strategy components in students' approaches to learning, and their relationship to students' intentions, the teaching/learning context, and the quality of the learning outcome. In contras…
Young children's representations and strategies for subtraction
This is a report of a study of the representations and strategies for subtraction, used by a sample of 55 children in years 1,2 and 3 in three suburban schools in low, medium and high socio‐economic areas of Brisbane. Each child was interviewed and videotaped individually early and late in the year. In order to determine what representations and strategies they would choose to use they were presented with operations represented in symbols and ask…
Recent Cognitive Theories Applied to Sequential Length Measuring Knowledge in Young Children
S ummary . This research was designed to determine sequential length measuring knowledge in children aged 3–7 years. Sequences were predicted in advance logically from measurement theory, from a review of the literature, and from the information processing demand of the tasks. A sample of 80 children from mixed socio‐economic backgrounds was tested on measures of capacity to process information and 15 main measurement tasks. Analysis of the data …
Information Processing and Scholastic Achievement in Aboriginal Australian Children in South-East Queensland
Twenty high contact Queensland Aboriginal children of mean age six years were tested on two measures of capaciy to process information (cf. Case, et al., 1982 and Halford, 1984) and on two newly devised tasks to measure levels of thinking based on cultural knowledge. The results indicated that these children possess capacity to process information that is the same as Caucasian children of the same age. Because these children have underlying capac…
