The geographic variation of cancer incidence in Ontario
OBJECTIVES. Our objectives were (1) to describe an analysis of the spatial pattern of cancer incidence in Ontario and (2) to discuss the quality of data in the Ontario Cancer Registry with respect to the accuracy of local cancer rates. METHODS. Cancer incidence rates were calculated for 22 cancer sites in 49 counties of Ontario during 1976 to 1986. Capture-recapture methods were used to estimate completeness of case registration, and completeness…

A Causal Model of Attitudes toward Mental Health Facilities
Nonuser responses to community facilities are recognised as among the most important factors determining the success or failure of community-based systems of service delivery. A causal model of individual attitudes to community mental health care is defined and tested with survey data collected in Toronto, Ontario. The results from a path analysis show the strong antecedent influence of attitudes toward facility users and of perceived impacts of …
Scaling Community Attitudes Toward the Mentally Ill
The measurement of public attitudes toward the mentally ill has taken on new significance since the introduction of community-based mental health care. Previous attitude scales have been constructed and applied primarily in a professional context. This article discusses the development and application of a new set of four scales explicitly designed to measure community attitudes toward the mentally ill. The scales represent dimensions included in…
A Transmission‐interpretation Scale
S ummary . Barnes and Shemilt (1974) have conceptualised transmission‐interpretation (T‐I) as an important dimension of teachers' verbal behaviour. Transmissive teachers are held to differ from interpretative ones in their beliefs about the nature of knowledge, in their expectations of student performance and in their perceptions of their tasks as teachers. These differences in beliefs, expectations and perceptions might be expected to surface as…
Attitudes toward the mentally ill and reactions to mental health facilities
Housing Type and Tenure Effects on Reactions to Road Traffic Noise
The reactions of different residents to the same level of noise have been assumed to vary depending upon their type of housing and tenure status. However, no empirical evidence has been presented to support this assumption. The analysis described in this paper tests the separate and joint effects of housing type and tenure on various reactions to road traffic noise, with the use of questionnaire data and noise measurements collected at residentia…
Factors Affecting Response to Road Noise
Investigation of the factors affecting individual response to noise provides an improved basis for the selection and implementation of noise impact reduction policies. This investigation is necessary because the cause and effect relationship between the level of noise exposure and noise response is confounded by personal and situational variables. Examination of the effects of these variables on response to road traffic noise with the use of data…
