This article introduces a framework for transforming Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through Heterotopic Affinity Spaces (HAS). Our model suggests HAS can shift traditional power dynamics by enhancing learner agency. Drawing on studies of affinity spaces and heterotopias, we present these spaces as free from the restrictions of formal education and academic regulations (FEAR), moving towards a FEAR-less learning future. A case study from the…

Using the latest wave of the Workplace Employment Relations Study (WERS), this article investigates the job satisfaction levels of LGB individuals compared to their heterosexual peers for the first time in Britain. Queer Categories: Queer(y)ing the Identification ‘Older Lesbian, Gay and/or Bisexual ( LGB ) Adults’ and its Implications for Organizational Research, Policy and Practice
In recent years there has been a growth in organizational discourse concerning the lives of older lesbian, gay and/or bisexual ( LGB ) adults, which has started to address the serious omission and invisibility of this group of people in research, policy making and service provision. Whilst this development is welcomed, it inevitably draws attention to the identification ‘older LGB adults’ on which it is based. Using insights from queer theory, in…

Black is beautiful’, and Indigenous: Aboriginality and authorship in Australian popular music
The ‘black is beautiful’ movement began in the United States in the early 1960s, and changed mainstream attitudes towards the body, fashion and personal aesthetics, gaining African-American people a new sense of pride in being – and being called – ‘black’. In Australia the movement also had implications for changing the political meanings of ‘black’ in white society. However, it has not been until the last decade, through the global influence of …

It investigates how pornographic narratives involving ‘Aboriginal’ characters or motifs are connected to broader embodiments of Aboriginality in popular culture. Drawing a parallel with Australian television drama and mainstream films, the article highlights ho…
A CAT‐derived one to three session intervention for repeated deliberate self‐harm: A description of the model and initial experience of trainee psychiatrists in using it
We describe a new Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT)‐based intervention for those who repeatedly self‐harm. It is specifically designed to be deliverable by staff with no training in psychotherapy. The intervention is simply manualized into sequential tasks that are mediated by new CAT‐style standardized tools. A particular feature of this intervention is the deliberate use of feelings elicited in the therapist (‘counter‐transference’) as (a) a gui…
