  • Personality disorders and the interpersonal octagon

Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL, John Shine•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•2000•Citada por: 2

The interpersonal octagon is a theoretical structure, similar to the interpersonal circle, within which a person's relating tendencies can be defined. It is constructed around a horizontal axis, concerning relating either closely or distantly, and a vertical one, concerning relating either downwardly or upwardly. The Person's Relating to Others Questionnaire ‐ Revised Version (PROQ2) was designed to measure relating within the octagon. To test th…

  • Attachment in an interpersonal context

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1997

Attachment theory is essentially a child‐centred theory which is not readily adaptable to the relating of adults. Dependence is proposed as the adult equivalent of attachment. Both attachment and dependence have both a closeness‐seeking component and an upwardly directed component. From this observation emerges a theory of relating constructed around a horizontal axis concerning closeness seeking versus distance seeking and a vertical axis concer…

  • The Interpersonal Octagon

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1994•Referencias: 33

If humans have evolved from earlier animals, there must be a common core of relating which runs from the simplest to the most complex, which is capable of multiple adaptations and variations. This is represented by the interpersonal octagon, constructed around the two nodal points of a dimension concerned with regulating distance, the two nodal points of a dimension concerned with relative power, and four intermediate points. Each point is associ…

  • Redefining dependence

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1991

What appears to concern Cadbury, as it concerned Kaplan some years earlier, is the suggestion that women may be considered dependent more often than men. My linking dependence with imperfect maturation carried the unfortunate implication that women may be less mature than men. My paper concerned predominantly pathological dependence, which may well be due to imperfect maturation. The distinction between normal and pathological dependence is cruci…

  • Interpersonal Theory

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•Human Relations•1990•Citada por: 2•Referencias: 27

Interpersonal theory, as formulated by Freedman and developed by Leary, was constructed around the two dimensions of love vs. hate and dominate vs. submit. The two alternative dimensions of close vs. distant and upper vs. lower are introduced because they are generic and value free. To resolve confusion concerning what the theory is about, it is proposed that it be concerned with inborn dispositions which have their origins in interactions which …

  • The total score of the Crown‐Crisp Experiential Index

Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL, Chris Evans et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1988

The Crown‐Crisp Experiential Index (CCEI) was designed as a measure of neurotic symptomatology. The tendency has been to report upon its six separate scales and to ignore the total score. We report on the use of the CCEI in a detailed interview study of 208 40–49‐year‐old women from a local community and 40 patients of the same age range and sex from a psychiatric hospital. In this study, scores on the six scales of the CCEI were shown to be high…

  • Defining dependence

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1988•Citada por: 2

The need to define dependence arises out of accumulating evidence that it contributes to depression‐proneness. Its accurate definition is therefore a prerequisite for the development of valid methods of measuring it. Because dependence is more a feature of childhood than of adulthood, a dependent person may usefully be viewed as an adult behaving as though he were a child. Dependence is best understood therefore in terms of those developmental de…

  • Attachment—detachment, directiveness—receptiveness

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1987•Citada por: 3

A system of describing attitudes towards others and ways of relating to others is presented. The system is constructed around two dimensions, the one concerned with closeness vs. separateness, the other concerned with dominance vs. submissiveness. Each dimension has two extreme positions and each of these incorporates a range of attitudes and types of behaviour which are systematically described. The two extremes of the closeness‐separateness dim…

  • Dependence and its relationship to depression

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1984

Evidence is provided that dependence, either as a trait or a state, is closely related to depression. Theories to explain this fall into two broad categories: that some individuals make excessive demands for affection and become depressed when these are not met; and that some have persistently negative attitudes to life and an inclination to self‐blame. These correspond with Blatt's (1974) two sources of depression, the ‘anaclitic’ and the ‘intro…

  • Some marital and child‐rearing characteristics of early mother‐bereaved women

Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL, John Kennard•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1982

A sample of 160 female, psychiatric patients from North‐east Scotland whose mothers died before they were aged 11 was compared with 80 non‐bereaved, female, psychiatric patients, matched by decade of birth, from the same area. Six subgroups of the bereaved patients classified according to the events which followed the bereavement were also examined. In addition, samples of 44 and 27 women from the Chichester general population, whose mothers died…

  • In search of correspondences between age at psychiatric breakdown and parental age at death—‘Anniversary reactions’

    Open Access•JOHN BIRTCHNELL•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1981

The phenomenon of psychiatric breakdown occurring when the subject reaches the age his/her parent was at death, misleadingly referred to by Hilgard as an ‘anniversary reaction’, is examined. It is contrasted to breakdown occurring at the anniversary of the death of a significant person and compared with the concept of nemesis as described by Chapman. An attempt is made to assess the incidence and clinical characteristics of patients breaking down…
