Bertram Mandelbrote was Physician Superintendent and Consultant Psychiatrist at Littlemore Hospital in Oxford from 1959 to 1988. A humane pragmatist rather than theoretician, Mandelbrote was known for his facilitating style of leadership and working across organisational boundaries. This article traces the fluctuating interest in research in group analysis since the 1970s and how resistance to evidence-based research was eventually overcome by threats posed by NHS commissioning, leading to the joint IGA/GAS commissioning of the systematic review of the effectiveness of group analysis and dynamic group psychotherapy. Group-Analytic Training Conducted through a Language Interpreter
In 1995 the authors ran an Introductory Course in Group Analysis in St Petersburg, using language interpreters in the small experiential groups. The effectiveness of simultaneous translation was evaluated using daily rating scales completed by trainees, conductors and interpreters, examples of mistranslations and audiotapes of sessions. The modification of personality disturbance in a therapeutic community for drug abusers
Two personality questionnaires, the MMPI and 16PF, were administered routinely to drug abusers admitted to a newly established hierarchical type of therapeutic community. Questionnaires were repeated at 6 and 12 months with those residents who remained. Comparison of the results with other studies suggests that drug abusers admitted to different treatment centres display a recognizable pattern of personality disturbance, characterized by a combin…
