Psychotherapy of a fatherless young woman
Psychotherapy of some fatherless adult patients suggests that they may replace the shameful experience of their childhood by an illusory picture of their past, and that they may exalt their absent fathers to an ideal perfection in order not to face the possibility that their fathers might have been irresponsible deserters. The two conflicting versions of the absent father, one conscious and one unconscious, are reflected in their image of themsel…
The will in psychoanalytic theory and practice
In psychoanalytic treatment insight does not necessarily lead to change, because psychoanalysis has not yet integrated into its theory and technique the full significance of two determinants: (1) the resistances arising from the patient's environment, and (2) the role played by the patient's will in his/her analysis. This paper is focused on the second determinant. Freud's elucidation of repression and other defences challenged the assumption tha…
Oedipal determinants in differential outcome of bereavement
According to psychoanalytic theory, a bereaved individual's prior relationship with the lost person affects his vulnerability to bereavement. Freud attributed the vulnerability to the intensity of ambivalence, and Fenichel saw Oedipal rivalry as one example of that ambivalence. It is argued that, after the death of a parent, reality testing, crucial to the resolution of the Oedipus complex, is disrupted differently for children of the same sex, f…
Complaints of patients presenting for psychotherapy in 1938 versus 1978
Reported complaints of psychotherapy out‐patients in 1938 are compared with those of patients in 1978. Both men and women complain less of bodily malfunctioning and more of anger, guilt, suicidal thoughts, and of sexual difficulties. Unlike men, women show a significant increase in interpersonal problems, sleep difficulties, depression and feelings of inadequacy or inferiority
The reconstruction of childhood in psychoanalysis
Reconstructions are defined as genetic propositions showing not only what happened to the individual in childhood, but also how he adopted his particular solutions to conflict situations in the past and how he continues to be guided today by that experience of the past. The relative neglect of environmental failures in psychoanalysis is traced to Freud's shift from physical to psychic reality, although the gains from this shift are acknowledged. …
