Quality of life among patients post-myocardial infarction at baseline in the Survival and Ventricular Enlargement (Save) trial
A comparative evaluation of a restrictive smoking policy in a general hospital
The impact of a restrictive smoking policy on the behavior and attitudes of smokers and non-smokers was assessed by surveying random cross-sectional samples of hospital employees before, six months after and 12 months after the policy was implemented, and comparing responses with those of employees of a hospital with no restrictive policy. Effectiveness of policy implementation was also evaluated. Results indicated that the policy was well-public…
Saliva cotinine as a measure of smoking status in field settings
The accuracy and reliability of saliva cotinine as an objective measure of smoking status was examined in two field studies. In Study I, saliva was collected from smokers and nonsmokers with repeated samples taken from a randomly selected subset of the smokers. Results indicated perfect classification of smokers versus nonsmokers and acceptable reliability of repeated samples. Study II investigated the accuracy of saliva cotinine in detecting rec…
The Framingham Type A Scale and severity of coronary artery disease
The relationship between scores on the Framingham Type A Scale (FTAS) and angiographic severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) was examined in a sample of 50 patients undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization. Age and family history of coronary heart disease (CHD) were positively related to CAD severity. Contrary to prediction, the FTAS demonstrated a non‐significant, inverse relationship with CAD. However, FTAS‐defined Type As with at leas…
Anger, neuroticism, Type A behaviour and the experience of angina
The relationship of personality factors to self‐reported variations in symptoms of angina pectoris and their impact on functioning was examined in a sample of 50 cardiac patients. The frequency of anginal pains was significantly correlated with trait anger. The degree of perceived interference of angina with daily activities was related to Type A behaviour, anger and neuroticism. However, only neuroticism was related to the tendency to avoid acti…
Aggression during Learned-Helplessness Pretraining as a Coping Response
This study examined the effects of the opportunity to aggress during pretraining for learned helplessness. While rats individually given inescapable shock showed deficits in subsequent chain-pull escape, the performance of rats given inescapable shock in pairs did not differ from that of animals exposed to escapable shock or no shock. These results are interpreted as contrary to the prediction of the learned-helplessness hypothesis and are consis…
Punishment of irritable aggression
In a series of three experiments using a restrained target procedure the influence of shock punishment of shock-induced aggression in rats was assessed. Regardless of prior experience with shock-induced aggression, punishment resulted in a suppression of the frequency and total duration of the fighting behavior. In addition, possible alternative explanations that have clouded studies of punishment of irritable aggression were ruled out by demonst…
