Self-Other Mirroring in Personality Structure
Individuals often use their own traits to interpret others’ personalities, but it is unclear if this egocentric tendency extends to the structure of one’s own personality: how traits are organized relative to each other. For instance, individuals who see themselves as simultaneously agreeable and extraverted may perceive these traits as closely linked when judging others. Across three preregistered studies ( n = 118; n = 72; n = 49), we tested wh…
Longitudinal associations between parental negative control and children’s deceptive behavior
Children begin to engage in deception at an early age, but such behavior becomes problematic during middle childhood. Although some cross-sectional studies have identified a link between parental negative control and children's problematic deception, the developmental pathways remain unclear. Children's dysfunctional attitudes, characterized by maladaptive beliefs about achievement and approval, may play a mediating role between parental negative…
The influence of socio‐economic status on child temperament and psychological symptom profiles
The influence of socio‐economic status (SES) on child temperament and psychological symptoms was examined using a nationally representative sample in Singapore. Data were available for 2169 children from 1987 families. Caregivers' reports were obtained on children aged 4–6. SES was operationalized as an aggregation of household income per capita, parental education level and housing type. Compared to their counterparts from higher SES families, c…
Parental warmth moderates the relation between children’s lying and theory-of-mind
Lying is a prevalent and normative behavior in young children. Conceptually, it is strongly linked with children’s theory-of-mind development. However, empirical studies show that the link between children’s lying and theory-of-mind is heterogeneous. This study examined whether parental control and parental warmth moderate the link between children’s lying and theory-of-mind understanding. Three- to six-year-old Singaporean children ( N = 116, M …
Pathological personality, situations, and their joint influences on daily emotional symptoms
OBJECTIVE: The present research aims to advance current understanding on how individuals with pathological personality traits construe their day-to-day situational experiences. METHOD: College students (N = 231) completed a measure of personality pathology, followed by six assessments of everyday situations and anxiety/depression symptoms over two weeks. RESULTS: Multilevel analyses indicated that personality pathology was meaningfully associated…
Subjective status and perceived legitimacy across countries
The relationships between subjective status and perceived legitimacy are important for understanding the extent to which people with low status are complicit in their oppression. We use novel data from 66 samples and 30 countries ( N = 12,788) and find that people with higher status see the social system as more legitimate than those with lower status, but there is variation across people and countries. The association between subjective status a…
Becoming more or less mature? The decline of self‐control in middle childhood
OBJECTIVE: This study examined the developmental change in self-control and its association with daily stressful events during middle childhood, as well as the factors that contribute to individual differences in the trajectory of self-control. METHOD: A community sample of 302 Singaporean children (42% female, 69% Chinese) and their parents were recruited when the children were age 7. Follow-up assessments were made when the children were ages 8…
Comparisons of Daily Behavior Across 21 Countries
While a large body of research has investigated cultural differences in behavior, this typical study assesses a single behavioral outcome, in a single context, compared across two countries. The current study compared a broad array of behaviors across 21 countries ( N = 5,522). Participants described their behavior at 7:00 p.m. the previous evening using the 68 items of the Riverside Behavioral Q-sort (RBQ). Correlations between average patterns …
Developmental Trajectories of Maladaptive Perfectionism in Middle Childhood
The developmental trajectories of maladaptive perfectionism, along with their consequences and origins, were examined in middle childhood. A sample of Singaporean children and their parents ( N = 302) were recruited for a longitudinal study when the children were 7 years old. Subsequent follow‐up assessments were made at ages 8, 9, and 11. A multimethod approach was adopted where parent reports, child reports, and observational data on a dyadic i…
The World at 7
The purpose of this research is to quantitatively compare everyday situational experience around the world. Local collaborators recruited 5,447 members of college communities in 20 countries, who provided data via a Web site in 14 languages. Using the 89 items of the Riverside Situational Q‐sort (RSQ), participants described the situation they experienced the previous evening at 7:00 p.m. Correlations among the average situational profiles of eac…

Interactive Effects of Parental Personality and Child Temperament with Parenting and Family Cohesion
Objective. This study examined the main and interactive effects of parental personality and (mother reported) child temperament on reported parenting behavior and family cohesion in Singaporean families. Personality Vulnerabilities to Psychopathology: Relations Between Trait Structure and Affective-Cognitive Processes
The present research examined (a) the relations among various affective-cognitive vulnerabilities to psychopathology, (b) the relations between vulnerabilities and dispositional traits, and (c) the mediating role of vulnerabilities between dispositional traits and psychopathological symptoms. Self-report questionnaires were administered to two independent samples in Study 1 (total N=274), whereas a longitudinal experience-sampling method was empl…

Self‐Efficacy and the Prediction of Domain‐Specific Cognitive Abilities
We evaluated predictors of performance in 4 specific cognitive ability domains: verbal, numerical, spatial, and mechanical. The predictors were individual differences in self‐efficacy beliefs, self‐enhancement tendencies, and cross‐domain abilities. Our university students' beliefs about their verbal, numerical, and spatial capabilities correlated well with their actual performance on standardized tests (verbal r =.33, numerical r =.27, spatial r…
