  • Oriki for Robert Farris Thompson

Henry John Drewal, C Daniel Dawson et al.•ARTICLE•African Arts•2017

When Drewal was invited to write a praise piece for Robert Farris Thompson for this issue celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of African Arts, he soon realized it was beyond his body-mind-heart, because Bob himself is larger than life, a person who has touched and inspired so many folks in so many walks of life and thought. So Drewal contacted his dear friend and colleague C. Daniel Dawson, who may know Bob better than anyone, as well as Bob's i…

  • Differences in Final Arrangements between Burial and Cremation as the Method of Body Disposition

Open Access•Grace D Dawson, JOHN F SANTOS et al.•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1990

A survey of close survivors of deceased persons from six metropolitan areas of the United States investigated the differences in final arrangements when burial or cremation was employed as the method of body disposition. Survivors rated the influence that various factors had on making final arrangements. The results from the cremation sample (N = 407) and a smaller, but comparable, burial sample 233) indicate both similarities and differences bet…

  • Suicide facts and myths

    John L Mcintosh, Richard W Hubbard et al.•ARTICLE•Death Studies•1985•Cited by: 1•References: 1

Although statements regarding “myths” about suicide are common in the literature, few empirical investigations have been conducted to determine the extent to which such “myths” are believed. A 32-item questionnaire concerning demographic and clinical correlates of suicidality was administered to 271 college students. Past history of personal suicidal behavior and that of others known to the subjects were also determined. In general, performance w…

There is a growing gap between needed and available mental health services for older adults. This article discusses the training needs, personnel shortages, and lack of effective service programs and proposes some strategies for dealing with the problems. There is a lack of adequate methods for identifying and referring frail elderly persons in need of mental health services. Services that are currently available to the elderly are identified alo…

  • Suicide among Native Americans

    Open Access•John L Mcintosh, JOHN F SANTOS•ARTICLE•OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying•1981

Suicide among Native Americans has received much attention in the recent literature. These reports have primarily focused upon single, specific tribal groups. While the suicide rate for Indians as a whole is equal to or greater than that for the nation, undue emphasis upon those tribes having especially high suicide rates has created the general impression that all Indian groups have high rates. The wide variations that exist among the tribes are…

  • Changes in Autokinetic Perception as a Function of the Transfer of Conditioning Effects

    Open Access•BOBBY J FARROW, JOHN F SANTOS•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1962

This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the spatial region in which autokinetic movement occurs can be altered by means of negative reinforcement operations. Three groups were employed. Control Group I was tested on autokinetic perception, and after a 4 min. delay was retested. Control Group II viewed and reported the location of a moving light with no negative reinforcement between the test and retest of autokinetic perception. The E…
