Measuring agentic capacity
This paper presents the development and psychometric validation of the Adolescent Girls Agency scale (AGAS), a novel instrument specifically designed to measure agentic capacity among girls in East and Southern Africa. Addressing a critical gap in evaluation tools, the AGAS provides a structured framework for assessing girls’ agentic capacity across four distinct domains: self-beliefs, gendered environmental beliefs, self-governance skills, and l…
Does Intermittent Nutrition Enterally Normalise hormonal and metabolic responses to feeding in critically ill adults? The Dine-Normal proof-of-concept study
Education in times of restriction
This paper examines the extent to which refugee girls and young women were able to access learning during COVID-19 education closures in Pakistan, and the role that EdTech played in their learning access. It is based on findings from a survey with 403 Afghan refugee students, along with in-depth interviews with six young female refugees. The research shows that, while the majority of female refugee students were able to continue accessing educati…
Poulton, Cheshire
This article presents the results of the radiocarbon dating programme and interpretation of a medieval chapel and graveyard in Poulton, Cheshire. The structure was associated with a lost Cistercian Abbey of 12th-13th-century date, which was relocated to Staffordshire after c. 60 years. Extensive excavation has revealed a minimum of 783 interments, interpreted as the remains of the farming community who worked the land after the monks’ departure. …
The challenges of hybrid work
An unwanted experiment of prolonged periods of working away from the office was forced on many societies by the COVID-19 pandemic. In the three years since the COVID outbreak, many organisations have shifted to hybrid work practices by mixing working from home with office-based work. Unsurprisingly, a plethora of both academic and grey literature has been published on hybrid work since 2020. This paper scans that literature in order to understand…
The structure of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale
The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS; Zigmond ‐ Snaith, 1983) is widely used; however, its factor structure is unclear, with studies reporting differing unidimensional, two‐factor and three‐factor models. We aimed to address some key theoretical and methodological issues contributing to inconsistencies in HADS structures across samples. We reviewed existing HADS models and compared their fit using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). We…
Combining proximate with online learning in real-time
COVID-19 forced universities to engage in rapid improvisation and adoption of online learning and teaching. This paper explores ‘real-time blended’ learning in which online students are taught simultaneously with students who are experiencing proximate learning. Two cliques could develop with those learning online becoming observers rather than participants in an active learning process. This paper is based on action-based research to develop an …
Investigating the National Adult Reading Test (Nart-2) and Wechsler Test of Adult Reading Test (WTAR) in predicting Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence – Second edition (Wasi-II) scores in an A…
Objective: The NART-2 and WTAR are used to estimate premorbid intellectual functioning. There are concerns about their accuracy. Our aim was to develop models predicting WASI-II scores from the NART-2 and WTAR variables and evaluate their accuracy within an Australian sample.Method: The sample included 145 adults aged 18.91 to 70.64 years (M = 34.70, SD = 13.30), of which 78 were female. Analyses examined the reliability of the word reading tasks…
Health-related quality of life after traumatic brain injury
By transforming the QOLIBRI-OS into utility scores, we enabled the application in economic evaluations and in summary measures of population health, which may be used to inform decision-makers on the best interventions and strategies for TBI patients
