  • Electric Shock and Rats' Preference for the Familiar Arm of a Maze

    Open Access•P P Aitken, M H SHELDON et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1970

Hooded rats were habituated to one arm and the stem of a T‐maze while being able to observe the other arm through a glass door (one arm was black and the other white). In a subsequent free choice trial when both arms were of similar albedo to the habituated arm fewer shocked than unshocked rats chose the novel arm. During an observation period following initial choice it was found that shocked rats spent significantly more time in the habituated …

  • Effects of Infantile Stimulation and Environmental Familiarity on Exploratory Behaviour in the Rat

    Open Access•Pamela A Wells, G LOWE et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1969

Adult rats, which had either been handled daily between birth and weaning or left undisturbed during this period, were tested (i) in an enclosed Y‐maze for 3 min. on five successive days, and (ii) in a dark soundproof box for 1/2 hr. on six successive days; the box had a single lever, a response to which produced dim light of 1 sec. duration on the final three sessions only. An interaction between the effects of handling and of environmental fami…

  • Deutsch's Model Applied to a Conditional Maze

    Open Access•M H SHELDON, Michael Sheldon•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1968

Holding & Pritchatt have recently suggested that an experiment by Sheldon, in which rats learned to choose the more frequently rewarded of two paths to the same goal, is not a critical test of Deutsch's theory of behaviour since that theory can be shown to predict that certain schedules of training will establish temporary preferences for one of the paths. The results of an experiment with mice were offered as confirming this prediction. In the p…
