The British use of The Barber Suggestibility Scale
The Barber Suggestibility Scale, as a measure of hypnotic susceptibility, was administered to 130 British undergraduate students by 13 student experimenters in a 2times2 factorial design with the sex of the subject and the sex of the experimenter as the two variables. The results showed no significant differences among the scores obtained by the 13 experimenters and no significant effect of either the subject's sex or the experimenter's sex thoug…

Perceptual’ Strategies in the Solving of Three‐term Series Problems
In the main part of this study 26 students were asked to solve 112 three‐term series problems and to talk about their strategies. These strategies were of two main types: (1) ‘thinking’ strategies which involved thinking about the meaning of a problem and (2) ‘perceptual’ strategies in which the solver responded to certain invariant display characteristics of the problem while ignoring its meaning. All 26 subjects began with ‘thinking’ strategies…
A Test of Piaget's Explanation of the Müller‐lyer Illusion
Piaget's (1969) explanation of the Müller‐Lyer illusion is tested in an experiment in which the following factors are independently varied: (1) the relationship between the length of the shaft ( A ) and the total length of the figure ( B ), from B = 1·3 A to B = 2·6 A; (2) the angle made by the fins with the shaft, from 120 to 160°. Using 60 subjects, nine illusion figures and a paired‐comparison procedure, the results showed: (1) that the illusi…
The Reverse Müller‐lyer Illusion and ‘Enclosure’
A reversal of the normal Müller‐Lyer illusion occurs when relatively short lines are placed midway between the ingoing and the outgoing fins (Fellows, 1967). Gregory's (1967) explanation of this effect in terms of constancy scaling is unsatisfactory. An alternative hypothesis is proposed in which the reverse illusion is due to the enclosing effect of the ingoing fins. This hypothesis is supported by an experiment showing that an equivalent‐sized …
