  • Canadian Policy Responses to Artificial Intelligence–Generated Threats to Democratic Elections

  • Negotiating Sovereignty in German History—Historiographical Challenges

    Open Access•Rüdiger Graf, Heidi J S Tworek et al.•ARTICLE•Central European History•2022•References: 1

This article introduces a special issue on the politics of sovereignty in German history. Historical work provides an important corrective to understand the current discursive resurgence of sovereignty. Historians (and other scholars) should treat sovereignty not as a factual description of the world, but rather analyze it as a rhetorical claim to assert power in territorial, political, economic, legal, and cultural disputes. Much of the power of…

  • International Organizations and the Media in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries

Jonas Brendebach, Martin Herzer et al.•BOOK•International Organizations and…•2018•Cited by: 4

For more than 75 years, Hollywood—its studios and its stars—have played their parts in the political and cultural history of the UN, and twentieth-century internationalism. These days that relationship has been glamorized by celebrities who regularly report back from the world’s crisis spots as ambassadors for UNICEF and UNHCR, or who speak out on women’s issues on the UN’s behalf. In this chapter I draw on original Academy of Motion Picture arch…

  • The Creation of European News

    Heidi J S Tworek, Heidi Tworek•ARTICLE•Journalism Studies•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 7

This article explores the changes in news agency mechanisms that accompanied the restructuring of Europe after World War I. During the interwar period, a new form of negotiation replaced the pre-World War I conception of English, French and German spheres of influence with a more cooperative vision of the collection and dissemination of news. I argue that the private and business-oriented nature of news agency cooperation enabled it to outlast be…
