A Covid-19 Outbreak in a Large Meat-Processing Plant in England
The meat-processing industry had frequent COVID-19 outbreaks reported worldwide. In May 2021, a large meat-processing plant in the UK had an outbreak affecting 4.1% (63/1541) of workers. A rapid on-site investigation was conducted to understand the virus transmission risk factors and control measures. This included observational assessments of work activities, control measures, real-time environmental measurements and surface microbial sampling. …
A Sars-CoV-2 outbreak in a plastics manufacturing plant
The findings reinforce the importance of enhanced infection control measures in manufacturing sectors, including improved ventilation with possible consideration of CO 2 monitoring, utilising air cleaning interventions in enclosed environments, and provision of good-quality face masks (i.e., surgical masks or FFP2/FFP3 respirators) especially when social distancing cannot be maintained. Further research on the impacts of job security-related conc…
Working Together for Health Equity
From the unequal toll exacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to the brutal murder of George Floyd, the events of 2020 vividly demonstrated the catastrophic consequences of structural racism in the United States. As we consider what the future holds on the many fronts of the struggle for racial justice, we reexamine the ongoing maternal-child health (MCH) crisis in the United States by focusing on Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Black families are affec…
Investigation of a Sars-CoV-2 Outbreak at an Automotive Manufacturing Site in England
Workplace-related outbreaks of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continue to occur globally. The manufacturing sector presents a particular concern for outbreaks, and a better understanding of transmission risks are needed. Between 9 March and 24 April 2021, the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) Outbreak Investigation to Understand Transmission (COVID-OUT) study undertook a comprehensive investigation of a SARS-CoV-2 …

Interagency Cooperation in the Twilight of the Great Society
NASA has put people in unique and extreme environments for over six decades. Supporting these individuals with a comprehensive health-care system has evolved over this period. As the Apollo program ended and NASA began to contemplate a space shuttle and space station program, societal pressures in the late 1960s and early 1970s caused federal agencies such as NASA to reconsider how to link the needs of the space program with a growing pressure to…

We Will Gladly Join You in Partnership in Harrisburg or We Will See You in Court”
In 1990, Mayor Sophie Masloff warned large not-for-profits, like the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), that unless they started making an increased financial contribution in the form of payments in lieu of taxes, or PILOTs, the City of Pittsburgh would take them to court to recoup what municipal officials perceived to be their “fair share” of the local tax pie. Masloff’s threat represented only one potential strategy employed by cit…
Health and Renaissance
In 1959, the Pittsburgh Hospital Service Association celebrated the city’s bicentennial with a publication titled “Pittsburgh’s Fortresses of Health,” which extolled the virtues of Allegheny County’s twenty-eight general hospitals.1 Calling all of these institutions a “city . . . a city within the city . . . that never sleeps, night or day,” the Hospital Service Association reminded its audience of school children, area industrial concerns, labor…
