  • A millennial-scale reconstruction of spruce budworm abundance in Saguenay, Quéebec, Canada

    Open Access•Isabelle Simard, Pierre Morin et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 3•References: 2

A high-resolution macrofossil analysis was conducted to reconstruct spruce budworm abundance in an 8600-year-old mire in Saguenay, Québec, Canada. Abundant spruce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana [Clem.]) faeces recovered in the peat profile suggested endemic and epidemic presence of the insect in the study site since 8240 cal. BP. Important variations in the abundance of faeces were observed, and two exceptional periods of insect activity were …

  • Reconstructing the late-Holocene history of a subalpine environment (Charlevoix, Québec) using fossil insects

    Open Access•Claude Lavoie•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2001•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In southern Quebec (Charlevoix, Canada), reconstructions of the subalpine insect assemblages were made in environments that were transformed by fire during the late Holocene (since 4500 BP). The ecological requirements of beetle species likely to be found as fossils were studied by collecting living beetles in pitfall traps in forest, suibalpine and alpine environments. The late-Holocene changes of insect assemblages were reconstructed by recover…

  • Late-Holocene light-ring chronologies from subfossil black spruce stems in mires of subarctic Québec

    Open Access•Claude Lavoie, Serge Payette•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Subfossil black spruce ( Picea mariana [Mill.] B.S.P.) stems from permafrost mires in a 250-km 2 area at the arctic tree-line, near the eastern coast of Hudson Bay, were sampled for the construction of a long 'light-ring' chronology spanning the late Holocene. Thirty-three out of the 143 sampled spruce logs were 14 C- dated yielding dates between 4580 and 1540 BP (3550-3010 cal. BC - cal. AD 377-649). Light rings (rings with thin-walled latewood …
