The Emotive Impact of Foreign Intonation: An Experiment in Switching English and Russian Intonation
This study explores subjects' responses in terms of emotion and attitude to native and foreign intonation patterns across four major sentence types. The goal of the experiment was to ascertain whether there would be a significant change in the judgment of a selection of ten emotions and attitudes with a change of intonation, while keeping other phonetic factors constant. Two languages and two groups of native speakers, English and Russian, were c…

Borrowing and the perception of English vowels in Russian
Data from the phonological assimilation of borrowings have typically been employed in linguistic literature in an ad hoc manner for the justification of various proposals concerning the present or past states of the source or target languages. These data are sometimes found in orthographic form, transcribed phonetically or transliterated into native orthography either by speakers of the target language or by linguists describing the language. Whe…

General phonological rules and phonetic processes: Russian palatalization assimilation
The kinds of rules found in the phonological components of generative grammars have been traditionally grouped into three types: (1) LEXICAL REDUNDANCY or MORPHEME STRUCTURE rules, which fill in redundant features of systematic phonemes within morphemes; (2) PHONOLOGICAL rules, which operate both within morphemes as well as across morpheme boundaries, and can either add or change features; (3) PHONETIC rules, which supply n -ary values to the bin…
Assimilation Rates of Borrowings and Phonological Productivity
In current phonological theory, borrowings are assumed to exhibit a fixed set of foreign features which distinguish them from the native vocabulary of a given language. In such a theory, assimilation of the borrowing appears to be a sudden loss of these features. The data presented here indicate that (1) the foreign features are not uniformly distributed over all segments of a given borrowing, and (2) the assimilation of individual features in bo…
