Heterogeneity in the Developmental Trajectories of Chinese Youth Educational Aspirations
This study investigated the development of educational aspirations (EAs) among Chinese youth (n = 2228, 48.61% female, 87.66% Han, M age_2010 = 11.48 years) for 6 years. Five latent classes of EA trajectories were identified. They varied greatly during early adolescence but converged around an associate degree in middle adolescence and beyond and demonstrated high rank-order stability across the period of study. High academic performance and acad…
Parenthood and Motivation to Change in Homeless Older Adolescents
Parenthood among adolescents who are homeless is poorly studied. Understanding how these adolescents perceive parenthood is important for providing effective health care, public policy, and social services. Fifteen fathers and 16 mothers, ages 18 to 22, from a shelter in Philadelphia participated in semistructured interviews. Coding and analysis involved standard qualitative methodologies. Participants identified parenthood as an important turnin…
A Theoretical and Empirical Examination of Identity as Coping
Spencer's (1995) Phenomenological Variant of Ecological Systems Theory is presented as a theoretical framework to integrate issues of context, coping, and identity in human development. The relation of coping supports (i.e., cultural socialization and spirituality) to psychological well-being was investigated for a sample of low resource African American youth. Results suggest that employment of religion and spirituality and cultural pride as a f…
Prosocial Behavior and Caring in Adolescence
Social imitation and the emergence of a mental model of self
Self-awareness, and the object of its reflection, the self-concept, are central features of the conscious experience of adult humans in Euro-American cultures. The phenomenal reality of these facets of experience have fascinated scholars interested in human nature for centuries. Philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, and literary critics have offered (often contradictory) perspectives on the essence of the sense of self. Perh…
Judgments about personal identity in childhood and adolescence
Judgments concerning personal identity were studied in children and adolescents. Each subject was asked to imagine entering a hypothetical machine which simultaneously produced two persons, with each person receiving one of four sets of the subject's characteristics: physical, active, social, or psychological. Subjects were asked to judge which of the resulting persons was most nearly identical with the self. Results from the first study with mid…
Negative impact of part-time work on adolescent adjustment
Researchers disagree over whether negative correlates of extensive part-time employment during adolescence are consequences of working or are due to dfferential selection into the labor force. This study examines the over-time relation between school-year employment and adjustment in a heterogeneous sample of approximately 1,800 high school sophomore s and juniors. Analyses indicate both significant selection effects and negative consequences of …
