Philip Melanchthon, Speaker of the Reformation: Wittenberg's Other Reformer
The studies in this volume illuminate the thought and life of Philip Melanchthon, one of the most neglected major figures in Reformation history and theology. Melanchthon was one of the most widely published and respected thinkers in his own day, who authored some of the sixteenth-century's most important books on Latin and Greek grammar, rhetoric, dialectics, and history, to say nothing of his theological output, which included the first overvie…

Defending Faith: Lutheran Responses to Andreas Osiander's Doctrine of Justification, 1551-1559
When in 1550 Andreas Osiander (1498-1552) advocated a different understanding of the central Lutheran doctrine of justification by faith alone, most other Lutheran churches in Germany rejected his stance, producing nearly one hundred opposing tracts. Timothy J. Wengert examines these reactions as a way of describing the theological side of confessionalization in Lutheran lands.
Martin Luther and Philip Melanchthon on the care and feeding of [future] Pastors
This article argues that humanist training was all‐encompassing, not just for Philip Melanchthon but also for Martin Luther. By reexamining the relationship between the two reformers in this area, the article shows how their substantial, overarching agreements, especially in matters of pedagogy, led to a single‐minded reform of Wittenberg's curriculum. Finally, it argues that their revolutionary approach to seminary training also addresses its co…

Philip Melanchthon: Speaking for the Reformation
Already theological conflicts during his lifetime have made forming an accurate picture of Philip Melanchthon’s contribution to the Reformation difficult. A close examination of his life reveals a theologian who blended commitment to the humanities with a passion for Wittenberg and Luther’s particular brand of theology. A prodigy with remarkable skills in languages, Melanchthon (1497-1560) became professor of Greek at the University of Wittenberg…

Dating Huldrych Zwingli's Lectures on the Gospel of John
Until recently one of the most surprising gaps in Zwingli studies was the absence of any systematic exploration of his New Testament exegesis. This lacuna was filled, however, in 1976 when Walter E. Meyer published an important analysis of the dating and origin of this material. 1Particularly helpful was Meyer's Suggestion that Zwingli lectured on the New Testament at the Fraumnster in Zrich during the afternoons from 1525 to 1531.In all events th…
The Rhetorical Paul: Philip Melanchthon’s Interpretation Of The Pauline Epistles
In the sixteenth century, no Protestant interpreter of Paul had more influence on his contemporaries than Philip Melanchthon. To say that Melanchthon saw how to rescue dialectics for use in the humanist curriculum, however, does not undermine his deep commitment to the rhetorical methods of his time. In the Romans commentaries of the 1530s, he goes on the warpath against the Romanists, enthusiasts and Origenists, defending his Apology of the Augs…

“Peace, Peace … Cross, Cross”: Reflections on How Martin Luther Relates the Theology of the Cross to Suffering
This article explores Luther's theology of the cross, based on his often overlooked comments in Explanations of the Disputes concerning the Power of Indulgences from 1518, Luther's defense of the Ninety-Five Theses. The article dismisses approaches that reduce this topic to one theology among many or claim more for it than theology can deliver. In explaining Thesis 15, Luther grounds theology of the cross in human experience of suffering and aban…

Caspar Cruciger Sr.'s 1546 “Enarratio” on John's Gospel: An Experiment in Ecclesiological Exegesis
Only months after Luther's death in 1546, a colleague, Caspar Cruciger, Sr., published his magnum opus, an 879-page commentary on the Gospel of John, In Evangelium Iohannis Apostoli Enarratio . Cruciger's Enarratio provides an excellent angle from which scholars may examine an important shift in Wittenberg's exegesis and theology during the crucial decade of the 1540s. To be sure, this work has few of the characteristics of other treatments of th…
